New version = triple the modding?
« on: November 20, 2008, 10:36:06 am »

If I read correctly, Toady mentioned adding more reactions, this time concerning food and fat, to the reaction raws. Does this mean that we will start being able to mod in more custom food and things like that?

More kitchen mod possibilities should be interesting (brew dwarven babies into soldiers  ;D)

[Healthcare Update Thread] Personally, I can't wait for doctors to get possessed and start surgically attaching axes to champion soldier's arms.

I can't wait to use the smelter to forge a delicious cheeseburger from dwarven cheese, cat meat and dwarven flour.

^^^ He specifically mentioned kitchen reactions, so you can probably specify a building too.  And a skill (rather than just Furnace Operator), I assume.

I doubt you'll see prepared food reactions in the raws -- it's kind of unique in how it handles arbitrarily sized stacks of "reagents" and adds their quantities together.  However, I expect you'll be able to do things like create a "construct bone throne" reaction that uses bonecarving at a craftsdwarf's shop, and accepts bones of any type to make a throne of that same type of bone.

The new reactions alone will have huge modding potential.  Coupled with the body updates, it's going to be insane.

And very, very broken for a while, too. :P

Still, those reactions you speak of sound awesome, if someone was to make a modpack where a stack of bones could be made into furniture items.

Should be now... (To mod it in)

This is awesome... Although personally I'd balance them into crazy psycho dwarves (that you had to keep on chains...)

I just got the image of a dwarf soldier running around with a kitten skull on top of his head.
I couldn't stop laughing.

I'm going to have one hell of a time tuning the Modbase if I want to keep it compatible...

Would it be possible to make helmets out of skulls?

This is already possible.

Only with some custom smelter reactions, as far as I know.

Yeah, and you can't genericize it -- right now you have to write a separate reaction for each bone type.

What I wonder is if the creature polymorhpism will let you have spicier goblins.  Could you make something along the lines of subspecies, like some goblins would grow up to be twice as large with the ability to destroy buildings, and some would be slightly runty but sneaky with the ability to avoid traps?

Anyway, pure and untainted glee for all things this upcoming version.
