Indie Brawl
« on: November 19, 2008, 10:02:34 pm »

Has anyone seen this yet? Tigsource is planning a smash brothers style game for the indie gaming universe.
Of course, a Dwarf Fortress Dwarf has been picked, and some cool ideas are being thrown around. Stuff like kittens being used as a support item, where the cats slow down whoever gets too close to it, like an fps hit.
The topic can be found http://forums.tigsource.com/index.php?topic=2425.0 there.

I think the person could fit more strongly Dwarf Fortress themed attacks in there.

Yes Easily the kitty attack and possibly a baby or menacing spikes.

The Throws I can see quite easily

A Sholder Snap, Eye Gouging (Harmlessly represented by poking them in the eyes), one hand toss, and a Bridge drop!

Alright I am going to post what the board put for a dwarf

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Stats-
maxhp - A bit above average (35
weight - 4
maxspeed - 5
accel - 3
air_accel - 1
maxjumps - 1
jumpspeed - 15
doublejumpspeed - no double jump
air_cooldown - 6
mask_x - N/A until sprite (should be the same as any normal character)
mask_y - N/A until sprite (should be the same as any normal character)

Tentative Movelist

Normal Attacks

A - Face Punch - He punches your face for mid damage. Low cooldown, simple attack, mainly for countering enemy specials.

>A - Side Haymaker - Dwarf lunges forward until he(she? Dwarfs have massive beards, it's a bit uncertain.) hits an enemy or has travelled 64 pixels(this number subject to change). If used in air, will lunge diagonally downwards until it hits the ground or an enemy. High cooldown, mid damage, used to launch enemies.

^A - Dwarf Dragon Punch - High cooldown, high damage. Like Side Haymaker, but straight up and more damage.  Used to attack enemies above you, could be used in mindgames invovling jumps to dodge specials ("if I jump to dodge that special I think he's going to pull, and he DDP's me instead, I'm going to be punched in the face.")

Also, it is a Dwarf Dragon Punching. Come on. That it worth it by itself.

vA (ground)- Low Boot - Kick to the nads. Like Face Punch but launched enemies straight up a little bit instead of to the side.

vA(air) - Boot Dive - High speed, Lunges straight downwards until it hits something. Low damage.

Special Attacks

Note that all Dwarf special attacks have a short startup wait time of a 1-2 frames during which he(she?) pulls the item out of his(her?) beard (you could just have some frame of a dwarf with his hand in his beard and use that for all of them)

S - Crossbow - Dwarf fires a single, fast missile straight ahead. Mid cooldown, mid damage. Used to keep pressure onto ranged enemies, and punish failed ranged enemy specials.

>S - Axe Slash - Dwarf uses an Axe to attack enemies in front of him for high damage. Hitbox should be large . Mid cooldown. Used to counter blocking and hit enemies who can just failed to attack you or are under cooldown.

^S - Barrel Toss - Dwarf throws a barrel that rolls across the ground. Any enemies it hits are tossed into air with high damage. Any projectiles (including crossbow) reflect the barrel and destroy the projectile. Cannot be used in air. Used to pressurise ranged attackers.

vS - Mining Pick - Dwarf hits ground with pick, producing a large rock that travels in an arc. The rock is destroyed when it hits the ground. Anyone that hits the rock takes mid damage, any projectiles that hit the rock are reflected. Cooldown is very high. Cannot be used in air. Used to defend against ranged attacks and to stop people chasing you.

The Dwarfs strengths are in close combat, and in forcing enemies into close combat. His specials can be used to lockdown a mainly ranged enemy, as although Dwarf can't really deal damage that well over a range, he can stop the enemy dealing damage to him, and a good Dwarf player should be able to force the enemy to fight on his(her?) terms

When the guy was pointing out the catsplosion page on the wiki, I was really expecting to see the thermonuclear catsplosion. Damn.

One of us should get on those forums and tell them gome grand things these dwarves could do. I suspect everything from This wiki page would fit well with the random moves suggested.

Heck, the Dwarf character if we wanted to get really complicated could switch between stages...

Such as Normal where he uses various objects used in professions and fort design

Then goes into martial stance where he uses the most brutal moves in all Dwarf Fortress

Of course they could just go all out and include Fae Mood, Possessed, and stuff... Though if that happened I guess the Dwarf Should just change stats and possible have one of their moves change.

If Dwarf Fortress got two characters the second could be a Goblin or an Elf... Though I guess a Frog Demon or Tentacle Demon would work as well. (Frog Demon only because he represents Toady and Three Toe rather easily as a character)

Exactly why I'm drumming up interest. Good ideas have been made, but this is in the hands of people who don't even play dwarf fortress. We need to invade the topic with our creative dwarf fortress minds, to ensure that the DF humor is fully intact.
I do like the attack, though, where a pair of pants is discarded by the Dwarf, and a swarm of dorfs come to claim it and trample all in the way!

I have one idea, if fatalities\final smash whatever they'll call it will be in. The dwarf looses a roaring laughter, fell and terrible! He butchers the opponent, and makes a pair of pants out of them!

I don't like joining boards I have no interest of posting further with... but I guess one person here could deliver all our suggestions to the board

I'll sign up with them and educate them in the ways of the dwarves then, shall I?

Don't bother saying no, the account confirmation  e-mail's already on it's way to me.

Another idea for a final smash would be summoning a crossbow and a bolt...

That might be better for the boss though, since it would be overkill for a normal person. Who would be master hand? A flying carp? Elephant? Elf?

The Crossbow's Bolt in the final smash should hit the enemy MANY MANY TIMES!!! effectively representing a Crossbow's ability to strike multiple organs

The problem with that is that the dwarf already has a crossbow attack, and we can't have it be very powerful, because the dwarf is a primarily melee character with some anti-range capabilities.

Then present a different way of representing the Dwarf... It isn't final (Besides a final smash with no range is usually suckish...)... No one ever said that that person has the final say just because he is first...

Especially since a Dwarf's weakness is air and Speed could be considered its strength.

How about we make our version of a dwarf here and present it to the boards?

The only issue I see with it is their choice of the game engine.
Technically, it has great potential, but practically, they would get at least 10 times more from C.

A couple of my ideas for special attacks.

Special-Up: Crossbow Volley.  Has a slight delay, during which time you can aim the attack (think Fox's B-Up).  When the bolts come out, they propel the Dwarf in the opposite direction they were fired in.  Roughly ten bolts per volley, dealing about 1% damage each with very little pushback.

Special-Down: Random Item.  Really, it's probably the only thing that fits.  Dwarf pulls a random item out of his pants to throw at someone.  Things could range from a carp (latches on and chews the target), a barrel of booze (explodes), a plump helmet (heals damage), an armoire (big knockback) or menacing spikes.

As for a Final Smash equivalent (if there is one), I'd agree with the possessed mood thing, or have the Dwarf temporarily transform into a megabeast.

A couple of suggestions.

-Get them the link to this forums topic

-Horrible horrible ideas, only saw one good idea from a native, dwarfs are meant to look like ascii,(well at first) no mention of the happy face is seen in those suggestions, horrid. Than again, look at my avatar! HARHARHAR! Hypocrisy! Anyway, atleast slap an ascii on the character generation in the field or somewhere on the equipment, heck even the lives! Strike that I'm blind.

-Booze, it should certainly be a must, dwarfs are alcohol dependent! Or it should atleast make them move faster

-Enrage should be a move, a type of charging one at that too; deals more damage, and speeds up your dwarf

-Also a random move where a dwarf looks in his/her backpack,(Someone should tell them both genders have beards) and pulls out a random item.
 Weakest to strongest
Pansy hippy menace Sword
Crude kobold dagger
Green skin whip
Humie Sword
Dwarf Steel hammer
GCS silk sock or thong

-Armok needs to be in it

-Recovery move should be a catapult or draw bridge, because it is more dwarven

That's all I can think of right now.
