HFS safety net...
« on: November 19, 2008, 06:40:34 pm »

I'm not sure if this has been done before, but here goes.

Drawing heavy inspiration from the topic where a guy captured some tentacle and frog demons using a room filled with cage traps and a support falling down, I've decided to use a "safety net" of cage traps to protect my dwarves.

Simply put, I build a big room, then a long, straight passage, entirely filled with loaded cage traps. Break into the HFS (for ease of use, try using a military dwarf temporarily deactivated) then station your hand to tentacle military at the cage trap room and your snipers in the hallway. Anybody wounded and unconcious will be caged, so your dwarves will be much safer with a negligable decrease in firepower.

Unless you have spirits of fire...

But, feh, frog and tentacle demons aren't really anything to write home about, in my opinion -- if all you want to do is minimize losses, a 1-tile channel behind which your marksdwarves fire will slaughter them.  Even in hand to hand, every time I've had frogs/tentaclesmy ten or so steel armored legendary wrestler/armor user/shield user dwarves have stomped them to bits.  Only spirits of fire and the "normal" demon scare me.

Also, you can manufacture vomit at a smelter.  Subsequently removing the smelter spews vomit over a surprising area.

Point taken. The only point of this is really not that I'm scared of Tentacles and frogs, but that I want to minimize any fatalities brought out by A: the original demon and B: really bad luck.

Dig two "pipes" leading from a magma source and a water source into the tunnel that leads to your HFS.  Put a floodgate or door at the end of each one.  Hook them both up to a lever just in case demons destroy one and not the other.  You can now unleash magma and water into the same tunnel, sealing the passage with obsidian.  Hypothetically, anyway.  I haven't actually tried yet.

Yeah, but this is assuming you actually want to FIGHT the demons.

And wouldn't "sealing" with obsidian just leave obsidian stone, or does it leave walls? I was just thinking it would make more sense to quickly rewall the HFS if you didn't want to fight.

It makes walls.  Building might not be fast enough, and you can dig out a new tunnel (or just the obsidian wall if the floodgates and mechanisms are magma proof) whenever you are ready to fight.

They might not kill your dwarves, but they kill your FPS with their pathing :P

If you want to minimize losses, just make a giant cave-in to kill the demons - it works wonders and is probably the most dwarven solution.

You can probably make them kill themselves if you place a support at the end of a room that makes the roof collapse

Eh, FPS would go back to normal quickly enough.  Still, cave-in is a good idea, especially in combination with cage traps.

If anyone wanted to seal the passage quickly, just keep a statue nearby and deploy when needed.
Edit: Most problems can be solved with statue(s).

I would imagine that demons destroy statues.

Actual demons (usually the leader of a goblin civ) can fire off fireballs as well, so you want to be careful of those guys. Remember that fireballs are bugged and cannot be blocked. Heat damage is scary as heck.

You usually get one with every group of "minor" demons.

With vanilla DF and no reveal type tools how do you approach HFS without breaking in accidentally?  Is there a way to shape around the pit and determine its size?  I'm on a map with (what I think) is guaranteed HFS and I'd rather be careful about going after it...

Build some bedrooms for masons nearby, so that they'll be hanging around when they have nothing better to do. If all hell breaks loose, they can wall it up quickly.
