Personally, I think they should bring them back and set them loose in Canada, so we can hunt them for sport.

I think we all know where this is going.  Prepare yourselves.

I'm curious as to how, once they'd extracted the DNA from a mammoth and created a viable ovum, they would go about getting it to gestate.  Implant it in an elephant?

I remember hearing that they would implant it into an Indian Elephant, as they are supposed to be closer to Mammoths geneticaly than the African version.

I wouldn't think either of them would be very genetically close to mammoths at this point.  Not to mention that mammoths were a lot bigger than Indian elephants, so it'd probably cause birthing problems.

Of course, I'm no mad scientist.  What do I know?

Actually, I think that it would be OK, since we have JAPANESE working.

Couldn't they just grow it in a petri-dish?

I think we all know where this is going.  Prepare yourselves.

Me and my friend used to do that for zombies.  I still occasionally do it.

You mean swimming pool-sized petri-dish?

Quote
Since there is a known case in which an Asian elephant and an African elephant have produced a live (though sickly) offspring, it has been theorized that if mammoths were still alive today, they would be able to interbreed with Indian elephants. This has led to the idea that perhaps a mammoth-like beast could be recreated by taking genetic material from a frozen mammoth and combining it with that from a modern Indian elephant.

From wikipedia. So a psuedo Mammoth, but it's a start.

See, I wondered about the genetic incompatibility too.  A petri dish wouldn't work at anything past the embryonic stage of development because you'd need a placenta and all that, so far as we know we're a long, long way off producing anything that can support a creature artificially through gestation.

Gah, when you say it like that it starts to sound too cruel to be justifiable.  Damn :(
