Journal of Cerol "Mook" Onuliklist:
1st Granite: Good news! And also very strange! As I was packing away the last of the administrative documents in my office and preparing to turn over power to the next in line I received word that I wasn't going anywhere. Apparently there had been some problems with my successors, and I was to stay on for one more year. This doesn't bother me at all, as I still haven't brought our military up to speed or finished the upper level.
3rd Granite: I reorganized the guilds again, once I noticed that my previous turn had left job duties in chaos. I used a military structure to organize all of the guilds into squads, since it was just easier to tell who went where when looking through my notes.
An elven diplomat arrived today and spoke with the Countess. The meeting was brief, but apparently he threatened us about our deforestation efforts. Now I don't know who made the elves the nature police of
our fortress, but I'm not going to leave our soldiers in leather and copper armor just because elves are partial to the trees.
There were alot of complaints about unemployment, so I believe most of my efforts this year will be involved in solving this.
10th Granite: The elven caravan arrived today. I decided to welcome them by ordering many of our excess puppies and dogs slaughtered to free up cage space and provide us with leather and bones.
12th Granite: While walking through the courtyard my shoes became caked in vomit. As I like these shoes I decided to order the second floor covered over, so that we don't have dwarves pouring their lunches all over the grass.
16th Granite: As I feel my organizational skills have reached their peak, I traded jobs with Skid. He will now be the fortress manager, and I will be the trader. I tried my hand at trading with the elves, and bought everything they had. It's not like we're short on stone crafts here.
17th Granite: Akhier discovered a child snatcher today, and promptly tore it in half. The lads don't seem to want to pick up snatcher bags, which means we still have a lot of them all over the place.
22nd Granite: Another snatcher. This time the three closest dwarves ganged up on him and tore him into a few pieces.
24th Granite: An ambush! I mobilized Nish and Ast, as I realized sending out our whole military for anything less than a siege is wasteful. The traps took care of a few of them, but the two champions still managed to get their fill of slaughter.
3rd Slate: Migrants! And not a noble among them! This brings our population up to 120. We are now considered a County by the monarchy, and I need to get to work upgrading the rooms of the Countess and her consort.
12th Slate: Another snatcher appeared today. A woodcutter split him from crown to chin while a passing marksdwarf put a bolt or two through him.
18th Slate: Another snatcher was chopped up by a woodcutter. The woodsdwarf guild is becoming quite good at soldiery.
22nd Slate: A dragon! I mobilized our entire armed forces, only to discover that the dragon was trapped between the channel on the upper level and a few trees. I sent all of the melee dwarves back, and had the marksdwarves pepper it will bolts. No one can claim a direct kill, but Zuglar made the shot which put out both of its eyes and its throat. Too bad we couldn't catch it, the Dungeon Master needs to earn his keep.
8th Felsite: The Countess mandated the construction of two toy hammers today. I like the Countess. She makes mandates that are reasonable, and which actually help the fortress. I personally crafted the toys for her.
8th Hematite: The Dungeon Master wants a clear glass window in his room. I'm not sure if he heard from The Balor, BUT WE HAVE NO SAND. I contemplated constructing a drowning chamber in place of the window, but the Dungeon Master has been generally helpful, and we have enough plate and cages to avoid the Hammerer's wrath.
Morul, one of the many children wandering about, has become an adult. I placed her in the Mason's guild.
9th Hematite: The Count Consort refuses to let us sell nickel silver items. I don't think we have any, but I'll keep it in mind.
A human diplomat arrived today to meet with the Countess. He complemented the fortress, then departed. Again.
14th Hematite: The human caravan arrived today, and it provides us with a chance to unload all of this goblin garbage.
The Countess has come to me and spoken regarded the extravagant rooms myself and several former leaders have. She believes this would not be a problem, except for the fact that our rooms are better than those of most of the nobility in the fortress. Out of respect for the common sense possessed by the Countess when she chooses her mandates, I agreed to dig out another residential level and relocate all former leaders and lesser administrators to inferior rooms.
17th Hematite: Nish, a farmer, has wrested mayoral power from the hands of The Balor. As the Balor had at least one ridiculous mandate pending, I welcomed the chance to relocate him to another room.
27th Hematite: A kobold tried to walk past a war dog near the entrance. Urist, one of the guards, finished him off as he was fighting with the dog. Maybe the fortress guard is actually capable of killing non-dwarves after all.
10th Malachite: I tried my hand at trading with the humans, and I believe I'm getting better at it. Afterwards I met with the guild representative.
The new mayor mandated the construction of shoes. Finally, a sane leader!
14th Malachite: A siege operator began babbling today, perhaps from the lack of work. It seems I made the mechanists guild a bit too large. He dashed into a mason's workshop and began work on something almost immediately.
18th Malachite: The operator created a fancy armor stand, which I have placed in the Count Consort's room to placate him.
28th Malachite: I scheduled the goblin prisoners from this year's ambush for execution, with Ast as the executioner. The Count Consort decided to pull the lever, but neglected to lock the door behind him as he ran away. The result was a humorously benny hill style chase scene around the killing room until Ast was able to finish off the last of the goblins. In exchange for saving her husband, the Countess has given Ast the title "The Bandit of Feed."
23rd Galena: I finally got around to finishing the agreement with the humans. The second floor of the courtyard has been floored over completely now, and vomit projections have dropped by 60%.
15th Limestone: The City Liaison and the dwarven caravan arrived today. I ordered everything not bolted down sent to the depot so we can clean up this place.
18th Limestone: Another band of kobolds, more kills for the woodcutters.
24th Limestone: Another kobold. This one had his arm broken and fell into a cage trap before bleeding to death.
15th Sandstone: The Tax Collector imprisoned a wood burner for failing to meet a demand which I was not aware was pending. Nevertheless, the sentence is a mere 20 days and it's preferable to a beating.
8th Timber: I vaguely recall buying out the dwarven caravan a month ago, and they finally packed up the last of the trade goods today. Our armor problem is mostly solved, although we still need some boots.
18th Timber: The Tax Collector mandated adamantine items today. I introduced him to a starvation chamber, and locked the door on my way out.
The Countess mandated maces, and I once again thanked her for being reasonable. As our military has been bolstered from the migrants earlier this year, the maces will come in handy.
20th Timber: Another mason went loony, and we found another vein of hematite.
27th Timber: The Countess mandated toy hammers, and I set to work as the loony began work in a mason's workshop.
3rd Moonstone: The loony created a fine chair he calls "Releaseworry." I'm not yet sure what to do with it, so I've placed it in storage in case we become a duchy.
13th Moonstone: Another kobold was dismembered by a woodcutter. They appear to be coming more frequently than goblins this year.
I just received word that a second kobold is now lying in several parts outside of the fortress.
The Countess gave birth to another child today.
Royal family: 4
Royal Guard: 0
I'm thinking of assigning the Fortress Guard to Royal Guard duty if I can. It may reduce justice-related deaths.
15th Moonstone: Two ambushes! And both of them far from the fortress! In addition, a kobold and two snatchers were sighted. The military was too slow to save a metalsmith and a woodcutter, but all of the invaders were killed or driven off. Tosid, a marksdwarf champion, has been given the title
"the Moist Bowels" following this attack. I'm sure this is the Countess's way of alleviating grief over the native deaths, because I can't stop laughing.
Nish was given the title "the Sunken Strap of Base." A woodcutter, Datan, was given the title "the Confident Indignation of Oars" to reflect his prowess at killing kobolds and snatchers.
Speaking of snatchers, another was just discovered and murdered by vengeful, looting dwarves.
20th Moonstone: An engraver gave birth, counteracting our population drop and bringing us back up to 120.
21st Opal: I decided the Tax Collector looked too pathetic, and starvation is no way for a dwarf to die, so I let him out. The room was originally designed to drop him to his death anyway, but that function seems to have misfired.
4th Obsidian: We have captured another snatcher in a cage trap. Were it not for the fact that snatchers are so weak, I would force the Tax Collector to fight it.
1st Granite: The Lantern mural I began on the top level remains unfinished, but I have begun digging out the rest of the residential shaft and some of the industrial shaft. We still need a few armor components, but I have tasked those and we have enough materials to complete them.
Skid felt himself legendary as an organizer, so I gave The Balor his job to allow Skid some time off. There are almost no trees in the area now, but as long as the military grows no larger we should need very little charcoal to get by.
I now intend to take a much needed vacation from administrative work. Perhaps I will use this time to hone my stonecrafting and record-keeping skills a bit more.
