From the journal of Cerol "Mook" Onuliklist:
9th Obsidian, Year 65: The former mayor, Cerol "The Balor" has abdicated from his position of tyranny today, after losing the mayoral election to a glassmaker. While many of his changes improved the efficiency of the fortress, it was decided by a council of Bloodybrain's dwarves that I would be reinstated as administrator for the time being. As this will allow me to reclaim my former position as fortress manager, I couldn't be happier.
I took the liberty of appointing myself hoardmaster as well as manager, if only to improve my own abilities and decrease the power of "The Balor." Much like last time, I put all extraneous animals to the knife in the interests of making our hallways less cluttered. The remaining dogs and cats were placed in cages until needed. I processed several work orders for fat rendering, as we are drowning in the stuff. Perhaps we can use the tallow to make some soap.
Another dwarf is currently mad as I move back into my administrative position. This time it is a furnace operator. He was screaming about tanned hides according to reports, so I decided to expedite the slaughter of the various critters in the fortress. I ordered new storerooms dug out in the industrial section, as we have a lot of clutter around the fortress. I have also noticed that the dining rooms and meeting halls are always filled with idle dwarves. Whether or not this is due to the lack of storage space remains to be seen.
10th Obsidian: All puppies have been caged. I ordered the repeating cycles on all of the shops stopped, as we already have too many statues and craft goods. In the interest of organization, I placed a mandate that all work orders must go through me so that I can set quotas and prevent future clutter.
14th Obsidian: As we have several dozen unused statues, I began placing them around the fortress, primarily in the residential sector.
20th Obsidian: The loony furnace operator acquired his hides and started his project today. The last thing I need is a mopey or berserk dwarf running around. I found ideal spots for all of the extra beds, and have cleared out new residential areas in the event we are flooded with migrants.
Also, WE HAVE TOO MANY MECHANISMS. Literally, we have almost 100 unused mechanisms in the fortress! This is a crisis for the furniture stockpiles, so I have made plans to build a killing pit for our caged goblin prisoners in order to put these mechanisms to use.
24th Obsidian: The crazy dwarf created a fantastic bone mace which he calls Beachedspire. I never should have doubted him. In addition, he seems to think his skills are now legendary. I put him to bone craft duty to see if he was bluffing or not.
Started construction on the killing room on the top level.
1st Granite, Year 66: Spring has arrived! Most of the animals have been slaughtered, but I decided to build extra butcher's and tanner's shops in order to speed the process.
9th Granite: The slaughter is complete. Speaking of slaughter, I began setting up the goblin cages and stonefall traps in the killing room today.
13th Granite: After looking over the list of wounded, I marked off those who have not recovered since my last term as administrator, and who seem to be doomed to invalidity. A wrestler known as Iteb seems to have a broken back which will never heal, so I ordered that no more food or drink be brought to him, so that he might pass on and no longer be a burden to the rest of us.
17th Granite: I noticed today that we have silver, lots of it. I also noticed a large portion of our military is currently crippled due to sparring accidents. I ordered the construction of silver weaponry, in sets of four. Soon we will have 4 silver spear, 4 silver warhammers, etc., so that our soldiers can train in any weapon without killing each other. I started on the warhammers first.
The Elves also arrived today. Probably brought nothing but junk again.
20th Granite: The elves brought Sunberries! By Armok I've not had booze distilled from that fruit since I left the Mountainhomes! I set Goden as trader again and sent him out to buy the elven caravan. I also designated a plot specifically for sunberry growth.
22nd Granite: Kobold thief! Datan, a woodcutter, sent it flying with one blow from his axe.
7th Slate: I just realized today that we have no sand, which means no glass, which means no way to build an Alchemist's shop or process soap. We have a lot of tallow now, though, which I assume can be cooked into meals.
While reviewing military reports I noticed that Tosid Nitigbomrek, Zuglar, Lorbam, and Bembul have spinal or brain injuries due to sparring, which would explain why they have been idle for so long. I ordered them to take up crossbows and begin practicing, as it is no longer safe for them to spar. I set all able-bodied champions to warhammer training, except for Momuz. Frankly, since he acquired that epic spear I'm a bit afraid to order him about. I started forging orders for the rest of the silver arsenal.
10th Slate: A woodburner started babbling today. My experience as an administrator makes me believe that he's possessed by something. As Mistem, the glassmaker, is the new mayor I evicted "The Balor" from the mayor's quarters and assigned him former administrator's quarters in the residential sector. Mistem has mandated sterling silver items, so I placed work orders for the smelters and forges. The loony claimed a Mason's workshop.
13th Slate: The maddwarf had no trouble finding the items he needed, and started his project today. A new bedroom layer has been dug out in the residential sector, and the killing room has been completed.
16th Slate: After a guard died from a pierced lung I finally took the damned spear away from Momuz and gave him a silver short sword to practice with. He's already reached the highest level of experience with spears, so now it's a moot point for him to keep wielding it.
I started work on a second wall on the top level. It's a good way to use all of this loose stone and keep some idlers busy, even though we don't really need a wall up there.
The crazy wood burner created a chalk weapon rack, which I placed in a new noble's room. He didn't feel more skilled after he created it, so I set him back to making charcoal. I also met the mayor's deadlines with no difficulties. He's so much easier to handle than "The Balor."
17th Slate: Another kobold arrived, and was promptly beaten to death by Zuglar the armorsmith and Ustuth the wood burner.
That artifact mace is apparently cursed, because Sibrek won't drop it, no matter how many times I order her to. I forbid the use of all steel weapons to prevent further injuries until I'm sure everyone has picked up silver weaponry.
23rd Slate: Migrants! But not useful ones! The king has declared Bloodybrain a Barony, and so we were delighted to recieve not only a Baroness and her consort, but also a Tax Collector and a Hammerer. I placed them all in the old administrator residential section until I can carve out new noble's rooms. The fortress is now exactly 100 dwarves strong. I also moved that fancy weapon rack to the consort's room, since he was complaining about shoddy living quarters.
7th Felsite: Iteb finally died of thirst today. He was interred with appropriate military honors, and may Armok give him a better fate in his next life.
11th Felsite: Tested the killing room with four goblin prisoners today. The stone traps performed poorly, so I sent Momuz up to kill all of them. In reflection of his achievements, the Baroness has granted Momuz the title "the Mighty Speakers," though I'm not sure how this reflects his killing ability. Upon checking the battle site, I noticed that Momuz had not put away that damned spear as I told him to, and had instead lodged it in the torso of a goblin. I immediately forbid the weapon, and forced him to use a sword as I told him before. He had no objections.
18th Felsite: The Baroness has mandated the construction of rose gold items, a mandate which I can easily handle.
25th Felsite: I activated the killing room again, this time stationing Sibrek outside in case the traps didn't properly murder everything. As Sibrek took the initiative and buried her fancy mace in the heads of each and every prisoner freed before the traps could kill them, I considered removing the traps altogether and just letting the champions rip and tear goblin guts.
1st Hematite: Summer! Another guard has ended up with a broken arm, and I'm sure Sibrek is to blame.
10th Hematite: A human diplomat arrived today, with no caravan in sight. Wonder what he wants?
12th Hematite: Apparently human diplomats are trained for speed, because the caravan finally arrived. I sent Goden out to relieve them of all of their goods in a peaceable fashion.
15th Hematite: I sent Sibrek up to the killing room again. I'd honestly rather have her breaking their bones than those of our guards. The diplomat complemented us on our fortress, then departed. The Baroness was as confused as myself.
"The Balor" was reelected today, but with the Baroness's help I've prevented him from retaking his former power. The Baroness has granted Sibrek the title "Grooved Voice," perhaps in order to make it a matching set with that of Momuz.
Goden bought everything the humans brought, save their oversized clothes and armor.
26th Hematite: The sunberries aren't being planted, leading me to believe they require a certain location. I decided to take up farming in the interests of better understanding such things in the future.
15th Malachite: I removed some of the cage traps at the entrance and replaced them with weapon traps. We have too many prisoners as it is.
23rd Malachite: The mayor mandated idol construction, and I'm glad for it. The more reasonable the mandate the less likely a good dwarf will end up dead. A dwarf was reported as being very secretive, and claimed a Mason's shop. I'm sure he'll make something good.
25th Malachite: Datan, the secretive fellow, started working today. I removed the majority of the stonefall traps in the killing room, as they were worthless.
6th Galena: Datan finished his project today, a fine chalk cabinet. I also sent Tosid up to kill the last two prisoners. After he shot them to death, I decided to decommission the killing room for the time being.
The lower level of the new wall is finished. I considered connecting it to the old keep, but decided not to waste the stone or time.
18th Galena: Shortly after meeting his last mandate, the mayor ordered crystal glass items today. I'm not sure what he's thinking, but maybe he forgot that WE HAVE NO SAND. So unless he's planning to hire a wizard to conjure the stuff, it's not going to happen. I considered jailing him preemptively, but I don't believe the Baroness would revoke his position simply because he's incapacitated.
1st Limestone: Autumn has arrived, and I performed a bit more work on the old entrance.
5th Limestone: A section of the old gate collapsed, knocking out at least a dozen dwarves. Despite this, only Flyingdwarf suffered any injuries. Oddly enough, even though he suffered moderate injuries over most of his body, as soon as Flyingdwarf regained consciousness his wounds instantly closed and he appeared uninjured. I considered putting him into the military, where his healing abilities would be more useful, but thought better of it.
9th Limestone: For Armok's sake! The Tax Collector mandated adamantine items today! I'm not sure what gives the tax collector the power to mandate
anything, but I'm thinking we need to order a new one from the Mountainhomes.
14th Limestone: The dwarven caravan arrived today. Noticing the shoddy state of our armor supply, I hope they brought plenty of steel goods.
20th Limestone: I had Goden trade away any copper armor I could find and buy all of the steel armor the caravan brought, along with everything else in the caravan. Goden's ability to instantly calculate the value of something is nothing short of legendary, and I'm happy I reappointed him.
I lined up all of the able-bodied soldiers in front of the killing room and began performing armor inspections. Now that we have more steel plate there is no reason any dwarf should be wearing copper. I ordered all remaining copper armor and weapons to be melted and replaced with iron or steel.
8th Sandstone: A miner and his dog tore a thief to shreds while building a road. Fun fun.
21st Sandstone: I ordered all of the ore and gems to be excavated in the lower levels. We need more iron bars. I also ordered all copper bars to be converted into bronze, as it is superior in every way, particularly in armor and weapons.
9th Timber: Migrants! Two of them! I expected more, but I guess these two will do for now. I set one to cooking and the other to furnace operating.
1st Moonstone: Found several good veins of hematite and limonite, and ramped up smelting activities in the hopes that I can update the armory before my term ends.
17th Moonstone: Goblins! Another siege has arrived, one group from the east and the other from the west. I ordered all dwarves within the walls and the bridge withdrawn. The western group contained several crossbowgoblins, but our champions massacred them from the walls. I extended the bridge and sent the military out to take care of the stragglers. Only three escaped.
The second group reached the fortress a short time later, and as they had no ranged support I sent the military at them in melee formation. Tosid engaged the pikemaster leading the group in single combat and suffered no injuries. The second group was annihilated, and none escaped. No dwarves were injured. In light of their exceptional performance the Baroness has given titles to several champions, as follows: Sigun Wheelsstops the Windy Brush, Bembul Daggerglad the Full Bane of Drink, Tosid Landschamber the Contest of Wringing, and Zaneg Helmfuture the Blockaded Cover. Hail these legendary champions, as they protect us from the green hordes!
19th Moonstone: A hauler has been given a beating for failing to craft the adamantine items mandated by the tax collector. I had hoped he would survive the beating, as the guard on duty was wielding a silver weapon, but unfortunately the hauler bled to death moments later. I have decided that, should I be reappointed administrator, I will put an end to the tyranny of this tax collector so that no future dwarf will suffer under his mandates. As my term is almost up, however, I cannot punish him immediately.
The mayor's mandate also ended unfulfilled, but jail time was his only punishment. A relatively light sentence this time. Ironically, Mistem the former mayor has the unfortunate distinction of not only being a political rival of "The Balor," but also the only glassmaker in the fortress. I admit to laughing at this twist of fate, journal, as Mistem should be none the worse following his short stint in prison.
26th Moonstone: Perhaps wishing to make up for the severity of the tax collector's mandate, the mayor has mandated construction of one door. I ordered ten constructed. The Baron Consort has also banned the export of bracelets.
6th Opal: An engraver gave birth to a girl today, and a planter claimed a clothier's shop with a fey look in his eyes.
15th Opal: The planter known as Mosus completed his project today, which was revealed to be a fine rope reed toga.
22nd Opal: Mistem's prison sentence ended today. I designated construction areas for the east to west road. Another baby girl was born. Sibrek never did drop that mace, and still refuses to despite being legendary in its use.
1st Obsidian: The Baroness gave birth to a girl today! And we struck another vein of iron ore! I'm not sure which is the better news.
7th Obsidian: The Marksdwarf Ast has been acclaimed as a legendary marksdwarf, and so I assigned him to hammer training in the event he runs out of bolts.
1st Granite, Year 67: Well, journal, since I was reappointed I believe my organizational skills are now legendary. I placed orders for all of our armor needs, although we have run out of fuel for the time being. Hopefully my successor will be able to continue the work I have started, and bring our military up to the proper level. In the event that I have another chance to manage this fortress, I will no doubt find new and more interesting problems to solve!
