Other uses of Bone armor is basically fear tactics to strike fear into your enemy.

The Japanese (or more specifically Samurai) are infamous, among REAL historians and not Japanphiles, for using the most inefficiant ordaments and armors for fear tactics... though this most likely developed because they couldn't afford real armor most of the time. In fact their armor was specifically developed for fear tactics.

So as we can see, not all armor is made to be effective as armor

Hoo boy, don't get me started on Japanophiles. Had the misfortune of getting into a "Katanas are teh awesome" debate, to which I go "actually there are weapons that were probably deadlier in melee. The falx and rhompania were exceptionally deadly curved weapons, their efficiency forcing the Romans to upgrade the armor specifically for them..."
"But Rome never conquered Japan..."

Think of the idiocy of that statement...I would have said "But that's because cavalry archery counters melee infantry as the Romans learned at Carrhae" but you can't argue with these types of people.

Who needs a sword when you have a rifle, which are better than handguns.

Anyway, elvs need to use more missle type weapons imo. Too bad missles always stack up to 25.

How about "Well, Japan never conquered Rome. Think about that."

Not game makers or console companies.  Not politics or religion.  Nothing will spark a flamewar faster than a bunch of nerds who've never touched a weapon arguing about the technical merits of equipment no one's ever seen in use.

Oooo, was it possibly the one over at The Escapist? That was a silly one :) I love those threads that draws out the teen nerds :D However, there ARE more important questions to ponder, such as would the young Picard beat the Kirk in fisticuffs? Though superficially Picard would seem both more limber and intelligent than Kirk, Kirk has a deviousness and street smartness that might be very useful.

No, it was actually the 18th birthday of a girl I knew through some friends, who happened to be a manga-nut. But seriously, swords are the domain of nerds that want to save the princess...if you fight, you work with what you have rather than going "Baww, but this M16 has a -1 penalty to jam"...

The "katana is best" and "Mounted archers are superior to unmounted" were all on the Bay12 IRC channel. It was fun thought.

Where were we? Ah yes elven equipment.

I by myself use an Woodsword since years in the different kinds Martial arts i practice. From my experience i can say that Wood swords do good blunt damage and piercing is also doable too. Sharpening wood is doable but i wouldnt recommend it cause it would most likely splinter if it gets contact with other weapons or better armor.

This special hardwood mentioned before, Guaiacum (Lignum Vitae), is used iirc for wooden swords in reallife. An sword made from this material isnt much heavier then an "fighting" sword and an bit lighter then an "show" sword. Swords from this stuff are by the way really expensiv.

I by myself did give the my elves Spears and pikes with pierce damage and Staffs with Blunt damage.

I am up to giving the elves some mounts that can fly (gryphons) hopefully it works out nice.

Giving the Elves Metal armor and weapons, i think, is an good idea if they did a war or do trade with Metalworking races is an good idea. This should be limited somehow thought.

Bone armor ... hell yes!

Maybe elves should use poison but that would have to wait some time. (Or i give them giantsnakes as war animals and mounts)

Elves should perhaps be able to get metal weapons and armor but only through trade with other races. No other way however and only to the extent that they have trade while also respecting that metal platemail is expensive and that Elves probably have some decent-amazing wood.

The current explanation of why Elves do not have metal is simply that they do not have access to it because it is below the earth which is something they have a disdain for.

Don't you hate those people with a hot, hot hate? "ZEE OH EEEM GEE JAPANESE STEEL!!1!" Right, because Europe didn't have famously awesome steel, like Damascus steel and Toledo steel. You'll meet japanophiles who will tell you that katanas can cut through European swords like butter, and believe it.

With that said, I think we should mod in katanas for elves to use, just so it's that much more hilarious when our dwarves bash them to a pulp with hammers. :)

Ok so reading the title of this thread sparked some ideas to do with making elves suck a little less in world-gen. I think that if when Magic comes in, elves should simply will plantlife to grow into a desired shape for their preffered method of killing industrialists with. Elven archers would, instead of carrying a quiver full of arrows, carry a quiver full of soil that grows arrows for them. This plant war-fare would be made all the better when proper poison, and stuff comes in. Sure dwarves have siege weapon, crossbows, and steel, but elves have a seemingly unending supply of poisonous arrows. And if boats/vehicles ever come in, then maybe they could have treants on their side eh? Like war ellephants but better. This is all very far from becoming a reality though. Also if you were to play them in adventure mode, I don't think you'd quite "Build" things, I think it ought to be more like setting up farm plots and then choosing buildings to grow on those tiles.

The elves in the ThreeToe story with the foul blendecs had some fancy poisons.

Also, perhaps elves would fare better if they could bring their animal pals along with them.  Giant tigers and grizzly bears and the like.

I made a suggestion a while back that wooden weapons would require lacquering to be effective. I also read Raymond E. Feist's Riftwar saga. Good stuff.

Yep, I agree. Elves should bring various beasts with themselves when they are sieging an enemy site at least. I think that this is a must have in the vanilla game also. [If it's not against the DF elf concept at least..] However, the same is true about goblins or humans even. They should use more war animals/beasts also.
Later on, we will be able to assign creatures to civilizations. Toady has mentioned this at least. [I guess I've got this information from an email.]
That will be awesome. Imagine, you mod in 5 types of bears for example, and you assign them all to the elves...and in the next siege a smaller bear army will show up.  :D

The more bizarre the use of animals, the better. Nothing says hax than an Elf being carried into battle on a flock of blue-jays, dropping bags of firesnakes upon hapless dwarfs.
