I just modded my elves to shoot arrows that do 300 damage instead of 100.  Since wood does half damage, that should put the super elf-tech just above steel arrows.  The elves need something to keep up.

Tolkien's Elves were a bunch of  aggressive, ruthless, suspicious, frequently bigoted, arrogant, craft-loving, covetous, metal-working, sword-naming bastards who lost their chance at inheriting the earth because they were angry enough to go war-to-the-knife with a demiurgic power over the theft of some artifact jewelry. So they like trees. Big deal. I like trees.

Well people ignore the interesting parts when it comes to elves and always default to "lol better than thou treefucking hippies" because an elf, somewhere, lived in the woods in one story or another. Even in a setting where they kill and eat you for stepping on flowers. I find it annoying

Am I the only one who thinks wooden swords should be removed from elven arsenal? They're a bit silly

Also, replace the silly wooden armor with humanoid skin armor. Say, goblin and maybe human skin. Slight loss in effectiveness but I think it'd fit our ecoterrorist cannibals nicely since both races tend to destroy plantlife and are frequently warred against. Can't let those bodies go to waste. It'd be lighter too, fits with the whole agility & grace thing

If possible, add a minor band of escorts to their caravans armed with spears and bows. Perhaps make them stealthed with movement bonuses to regular walking speed to offset their poor armor and soft flesh

It'd all give them flavor. Hopefully people would finally realize they're an immortal race of zergling ecoterrorists who kill and eat you for cutting trees, not Tolkien hippies. Sure, their fighting prowess in world gen is rather laughable but I think that's more of an issue with the generator itself

Well yeah, Elves are cannibals and they are fighting with toy weapons.  ;D
Either way, Toady's elves are quite unique, so what is the problem? I also don't like the concept of the DF elves that much...I would prefer to have Tolkienish elves, but it's not so important anyway. If you don't like it, just modify the RAWs. It's quite easy, isn't it?
I doubt that Toady will change the elves in the vanilla game, and in fact he shouldn't change them...at least they are not "ordinary" elves, and it's all cool!  ;)

No problem. If  I want Tolkienian  elves I'll mod them. That would be easy (I want Andersenian. That would be more difficult). I don't have any problem with Toadie's version. I just object to the misrepresentation in this thread.

I gave my elfs huge thorn lances for lulz

Dwarf: "The Elves are comming sir"
King: "Ha, they shall be easy pickings"
Dwarf: "But sir... They have pointy sticks"
King: "Pointy sticks? We are doomed!!!"

Anyhow, I am not sure what you want the elves really to do... I guess they could make weapons out of some rock... but wood is exactly the same anyhow so it is pointless. Well unless Toady finally gives most objects in the game differing stats in attack and defense.

You'd either be surprised or humored by the fact that I really did add pointy sticks.

As far as other interesting weapons I put in. Thorny whips: which do crap damage, but have a very high crit points, great leaf blades: which are the elvs equivilant to an axe, and this funny one I called a rawrak: which is a sword that dose pierce damage, more thorns.

Unfortunatly I don't know how to make these things affect world gen, infact I think they somehow make it more difficult. Although I will admit when you try a no crossbows challenge, and add the mega elf weapons it is a little more harder to survive a elf siege. Especially when the bastards sneak attack! >:(

Did you assign the weapons to the elves properly?

Yeah I did, but than again I did ramp up the caves to five hundred mountain, and non mountain.

It only seemed to happen in that world gen, the humans survived 50% of the time, and the gobos, and dorfs had no trouble.

Yes, wooden swords can be used like clubs. But what's the point of making it a sword at that point?

Balance. A wooden club (say, a baseball bat), and a wooden sword have different center of masses, and swing differently.

Quote
The combat rules make it pierce steel armor too on occasion, to the point of piercing organs with it. That's some mean wood you have there

That said, this is a good point. I can't see a wooden sword piercing organs (but breaking down armor? Surely).

By the way, a small piece of trivia. The point of wooden swords was never not to hurt the people who were practicing with them - rather, they were used not to blunt the real swords during practice.

Thorns.  Splinters.  Wooden stakes.  Wooden arrows.
Wood can be pretty nasty.

Huh?  Not even when used for thrusting?

No, they're too thick. They would probably turn the organ into a bloody pulp mess before piercing them, if you applied that much force.

I find the elven wooden armour much more absurd than the swords for precisely these reasons. It's odd they don't make cloth armour.

Raymond Fiest's Tsurranuanni used woden swords, lacquered and folded and managed to wage a ten year war.  Not bad.

You gotta be kidding. Let's take a look at Lignum Vitae for example:

"Lignum Vitae is considered the hardest commercial wood. With a hardness of 4500 it is roughly three and a half times as hard as red oak. This wood is not only extremely hard, but it is also extremely heavy, with a specific gravity over 1.0 it will sink in water.

The hardness of lignum vitae makes it ideal for situations where durability is necessary. Historically it has been used for making things such as pulleys and propeller bushings for boats. It also excels where high density is valued such as in a woodworking mallet."

I am pretty sure that any swords made from hardwoods could easily pierce organs.

I don't know that it's impossible, but I'm pretty sure sharpening wood enough to make a slashing weapon is awfully tough.  A spear, on the other hand, shouldn't be too hard.  A spear capable of piercing pretty much any armor tougher than leather would be all but impossible (unless you're the Incredible Hulk and can ram a stick through brick walls, in which case you don't really need a spear).  Leather itself would be pretty damn hard to pierce.  Leather armor is just a teensy bit thicker than a pair of leather hotpants.
