Let us milk tamed purring maggots

Dwarves are far too eager to eat the maggots as is. Food priority is pretty broken in that regard

Wouldn't hurt to implement milking of cows and other miscellaneous animals. Maybe replace cows with goats for dwarves for flavor reasons

Right now the code doesn't know how to milk non-vermin animals, as the vermin are a haulable ingredient, whereas cows are not.

Yes, I know. It would be nice if what we have was fixed first. As is, cheese is really not worth the effort. It would be if one didn't have to micromanage dwarves to avoid them eating the livestock

Not entirely sure what happens to the worm if the task is interrupted by thirst or the like but that should be fixed once Toady finishes task prioritizing

Which is kind of strange - they're able to lead animals to the butcher shop, so there is code for moving non-vermin animals around - why wasn't it used here?

Slaughter code would probably turn the cow itself into milk. It also probably would let you milk bulls

It has to do with the fact that for a dwarf to milk an animal, he must be carrying it, cows, being too big for a dwarf to carry, are unmilkable.

Then there are the player-enforced methods of preventing maggot-eating.

Two guards stand before a doorway labled Maggot Milking Station.
Guard McDwarfy: "Stop!  Why art thou trying to pass through this doorway?"
Urist McMilker: "I was tasked by the overlord to aquire some dwarven milk..."
Guard McDwarfy: "And when was the last time you ate?"
Urist McMilker: "I had lunch naught but an hour ago."
Guard McDwarfy: "You may pass!"
Dwarf McGuard: *munch munch*
Guard McDwarfy to companion: "What are you eating?"
Dwarf McGuard: "Nothing, why?"
Urist McMilker cancels milk creature: Item Lost or Destroyed
