I was going through a string dump and found this:

 ELEC
Look, if you want to play DND, I'm sure you can find a game that has your
favorite metal in it.  Don't look here.

Has anyone else found anything interesting or surprising in the exe with a hex editor?

That's odd, because you can totally make electrum in this game...

Also, you can manufacture vomit at a smelter.  Subsequently removing the smelter spews vomit over a surprising area.

Perhaps toady added that in before doing any actual research on Electrum?

It's an old joke/easter egg.

You couldn't make electrum in the 2d version until you got the DM.

Found these strings while looking for something else that happened to be nearby in the exe:

The item sparkles with a supernatural brillance.
The air around the object seems warped as if it were very hot, yet the item is cool to the touch.
The object looks oddly square.
The item constantly emits a nearly inaudible high-pitched whistle.
The item is covered with small bumps.
The item smells like wet earth.
Tiny streaks of lightning streak quickly over the object's surface.
Creatures that look at the item cannot think negative thoughts.
The item is covered with minute gray hairs.
The item sounds like rustling leaves when moved.

Imagine these descriptions with the same randomness as existing item descriptions thrown in. Endless random fun.

"This is Sigun Odomtirist. The item is covered with minute gray hairs. The item smells like wet earth."

Alternatively;

"This is Captain Ironblood. The item sparkles with a supernatural brillance. Creatures that look at the item cannot think negative thoughts. Except Goblins."
