Shaft Fort
« on: November 18, 2008, 07:28:45 am »

I found this empty magma shaft (ex-volcano) and I decided to build a fort INSIDE it.. Basically having one (or two) floor connections that hold the whole structure and also an easy way to disconnect the whole thing and crash it to the bottom in case of some catastrophe. Anyone ever tried this?

Yes, They have been built in Pits and even in active volcanos.

Still, it is a fun thing to do. Mayhaps another theme? Something different...

River chasm fortress? Cave river fortress?

I've got one I'm going to be starting soon that will be built around a waterfall-river split, primarily.

Also, I recently colonized a bottomless pit area so that I would have a bridge crossing the void, whereupon my enemies would march in, get shot at, and if they didn't fall off/bleed to death by then, my soldiers at the locked gate would stave them off.

Thought of doing something like that in my pure defensive fort but due to the late discovery of the pit i could not include it without my etstetic sense going on red alert.

But did you really have to sink the rest of the map in fiery doom?

Ofcourse! I intend to only leave the walkways free from magma.
And its amusing.

Playing with massive quantities of magma in my temple of Armok too.(under construction)

I'm already doing a River-chasm fortress, I think. If you mean just on a chasm, which mine is zig-zagging and using most of the larger places on the chasm to make the larger parts of my fort.

If you mean a River and a chasm fort, then I dunno what you mean.

Just a long chasm as opposed to a bottomless pit chasm.

You know, a lot of these challenges are a lot worse when you do a nano-fortress on 'em. Bottomless pit nano-fortress, anybody?

I tried building a tower in a bottomless pit once, but it didn't work out so well. Turns out, you can't build down, so you'd have to start at the bottom. Also, the constructions were constantly interrupted by chasmic critters several levels down.

... y'know, this makes sense?

But now I can't stop giggling madly over the idea of a dwarf, dangling from a rope with a pick and a bucket of bricks in hand, frantically yelling up at his compatriots,

"GET MEH OUTTA HERE, LADS!  THE BATS!  THE BAAAATTS!!"
