 Unless you remove the one tile around them. Preferably through drawbridges. Thus you have a cat hanging in the air, giving birth to kids that will be in whatever pit you want.

I would bet money Andrew has edited things retroactively, except I can't prove anything because it was edited retroactively.

The mental image of a cat strung up by its neck suspended from the ceiling on a chain and popping out babies into a trap corridor is horrifyingly hilarious.

For those excited with the idea, I transferred my brainstorming to paper first, and then to the wiki. Feel free to contribute, but please avoid any winds inside my head. Use the wiki instead.

cats can too breed in cages! i put all of my starting cats in one cage, and after 5 seasons, they started having kittens. that meant i had to cage the 4 of 10 kittens that escaped, but they do breed in cages.

They escaped?  The cats I caged got their kittens inside their cage. Although all cats where inside that very cage, perhaps this matters somehow.

Creatures don't hang from restraints - I believe I heard that it will fall on the floor and then walk back to a tile 1 away from restraint (if it can path to it)

Cages = no pathing.

You can allow or stop your dwarves from eating these mushrooms, but it's entirely optional and doesn't turn Dwarf Fortress into Dwarf hookah-smoking pad.

Does a restrained creature path?

I think the only thing cats path for anyway is taking their vermin kills to their owners - and they're not necessarily going to be killing that much vermin when they're tied up

Does a restrained creature path?

No.  It sits on the chain and only ever on the chain.

Or the 8 squares around the chain, if it can.

Animals (including cats) will not breed in cages, but they do give birth in the cage.  The offspring will stay in the cage until a dwarf frees them because they're not assigned to the cage.

The ropes idea is better.

They probably bred before being caged.  Things don't give birth the second they become pregnant.

This is one of the most awesome idea's I've ever seen.  Do you plan on posting the save?

Of course. Bragging is part of the plan.

But I fear I have to hold on with this project for a while. Few are the minutes spared for activities as sitting around and feeding smileys with percentage signs.
