Hunter training
« on: November 17, 2008, 04:03:27 pm »

Hunters should shedule some automatic training like guards do, so you can have him to fight well against the beasts without drafting into military.

to make it easier in the soldier and hunting tab should be a new option on which level he should get his fighting skill before starting. because its just annoying on maps with elefants and unicorns if he runs just out into the suicide without propper skills

There is actually only 1 reason to ever assign hunting.  That reason is to make your dwarves equip weapons and armor so they can better survive seiges.

You can set your military to harrass dangerous wild animals and chase enemies.  Then give them a patrol route that coincides with the normal creature migrations.  When they are on active duty they will attack anything in thier range, and will still pratice while off duty.  Using the military in this fashion is much more efficient.

Perhaps the hunters would have the equivalent of 'on duty/stand down' order called "hunting season", when not hunting they will practice marksmanship and possibly ambushing too, of just plain do ANY other task to which they are assigned.

you know some people play df, as a fun game, not to make most out of everything even it means that something particular shouldnt be done (like no hunters and use military for hunting, or traps to fend of any siege without a single military dwarf etc etc)

Could call it 'Dwarves go outside'?  Still needs the practice task though...

you know a woodcutter or some other civils go outside, in the ordered saftey can still do work, but you shouldnt have to turn of the hunter and draft him into military til he gotter propper skills (because of the unhappy thoughts and generaly)
