Spontaneous combustion!
« on: November 16, 2008, 10:32:14 pm »

I turned off temperature and set about blocking the river, and once done I turn on temperature. When it loads 2 of my dwarves instantly die, and everything else begins to lose damage over time, and eventually bleed to death. The damage they take is very even, all body parts take damage at the same rate. It is really wierd and I have the entire save and 40d game in DFFD here:

Probably a murderously hot biome.

Are you sure they're burning up and not freezing?  Because dwarves can freeze pretty easily on cold maps.

Did you use cheats or tools of any kind? Like, what's it called, Tweak? Apparently those can mess up the temperature info on tiles.

I did use tweak, but I did not modify the temperature of any tiles except a single tile which I made magma out of but I dug that out and it disappeared.

Are any dwarves walking through this square? The way I remember it, sometimes (always?) when you use tweak the temperature of the affected tile gets set to 0 degrees DF - which is, like, absolute zero, lethaly cold - and gets stuck at that temperature. So any creature walking through any such tile will instantly die from cold.

Something along those lines, anyway. There's been previous threads about this, I'm sure they could be found with some clever searching. Could this be the cause of your problems? Perhaps your dwarves walked through this square earlier and had their temperatures set to 0 - only that didn't really do anything until you turned temperature on, and they froze to death.

Perhaps when the magma 'disappeared' it only 'disappeared' from view, the surrounding tiles still contain the 'phantom magma'.

SPOILER ALERT
Build a Trade Depot anywhere on the map.  now hold Shift+D (Depot access display) while viewing a Z-level that has been completely untouched by miners.  All 'normal' stone areas will have big red D's all over them.  Any area with *any* sort of site feature will be blank (no D's).

It's a bug with tweak (unless it's been fixed?) that if you modify a tile at all (don't have to change the temperature, any modification will do it) the tile will frequently (not 100% but almost always) be set to a bajillion degrees below absolute zero and kill any dwarf that walks into it (not instantly, but he won't get far).

If it's an outside tile, eventually the temperature gets reset back to what it should be. If it's a subterranean tile it's like that forever and tweak won't fix it. Channeling out over it so it becomes outside might fix it, I've never tried.

I'm not sure if this is the problem you have or not, but considering you used tweak I'd guess it is.

Someone didn't really read the op  :P

Continued...

When you turn off temp, dwarves can still catch on fire.  They wont burn, emit smoke or anything; that is unless you turn temp back on.  They spontaneous combust (which is just the fact that fire suddenly damages them)!  And since dwarves meet constantly in the fort, the fire has had good time to spread.  By the way, are any of your beds burning?

MyLittlePonyBuiltMyHotRod, this is your first warning. I would like to direct you to read our forum's FAQ and posting guidelines before posting again. He said they started taking damage then bled to death (which the game sometimes says instead of freezing). This is what happens when dwarves walk over bugged tiles created by tweak.

he later said they burned to death, but didn't say why he thought that so I assumed he was just mistaking freezing for burning. On loading the save, they are in fact on fire and burning to death, so I misunderstood.

I'm not sure what the problem is, but I'd guess it has something to do with tweak and/or the magma he created rather then a bug in DF.
