This begs the question of how much people have overclocked their systems to handle Dwarf Fortress.

A cap of 9001 nets me a good 1.6k when paused. Unpaused, it's fairly unsteady but centers around 700-ish on a good sized map with various flows and weather (though temp was off).

Quick note - Those little dormant programs (messengers, download managers) managed to shave a good chunk off of FPS for each one I closed. There were a few left open when I measured. At any rate, remember that with DF, every little program is like another mob kittens. Annoying, superfluous, and ready to be butchered.

The computer itself cost about 400 bucks total (including a decent video card), and houses a Celeron 3.20 gig and 2gb of RAM on XP.

The problem with these tests are, that we ain't using the same sized maps -> map features, and the same ini options. All embarked areas are very different.
If we would like to make a proper test, someone should upload a zipped up DF with a saved game. We could use that save to test the FPS.  :)

The test should be on a completely flat desert map. Seven dwarves, no animals, no items.

Goodness, imagine DF at 700 FPS...

I would bet money Andrew has edited things retroactively, except I can't prove anything because it was edited retroactively.

my cap is on 500 but im guessing it will run about 600 on tundra or desert terrain, with about 20 or 30 dwarves.

I remember seeing this DF video where this guy is wondering why his FPS spikes above 1k.

On a tiny fortress, around 1 - 25 dwarves,  I get about 160 FPS.

On a small fortress, around 26 - 50 dwarves, I get about 100 FPS.

On a medium fortress, around 51 - 100 dwarves, I get about 50 FPS.

On a large fortress, around 101 - 150 dwarves, I get about 20 FPS.

On a huge fortress, around 151 - 200 dwarves, I get about 10 FPS.

My current fortress is 162 dwarves, they reproduce faster than my negligence kills them.  I no longer rely upon or receive immigrants.  The king should arrive soon, though I never found any adamantium.  I stopped playing because anything less than 30 FPS is simply too slow to fathom.
