Egah!!  You don't charge at a elite marksman in an open field!   :o

Seconded. Use the surprise door! Marksmen can't shoot through the closed bridge! You can also safely open the spike corridor to lure them in, since anything that gets past the spikes (they can be a bit difficult to time) can be beaten by 4 or 5 melee dwarves on their way up the stairs on the other side.

Also, if the final siege was any indication, maces work perfectly acceptably: I think Baby got 7 or 8 kills that siege. Avoiding spears is good, though, since if a spear gets anything other than an instakill the orc can more or less laugh it off. I had the guards on hammers since there were a lot of them lying around, and they are fairly safe to train with.

The suprise door really wasn't an option, same with the spike corrider, because they sat around the campfires all spring. I'm not kidding.

Don't mind the names like 'Baby' or 'Wimpy'.  I have a habit of naming dwarfs that when they are unhappy alot.   ::)

8th felsite

Hey, migrants!

13th hemanite

Hey, a human caravan!

I’m going to trade with them.

14th hemanite

An elven diplomat! Wait, WHAT?

16th hemanite

Some orcs have come

22nd hemanite

The deathtrap has the dubious distinction of having killed more dwarves than orcs. The idiots in the military abandoned their posts and charged through the deathtrap until I ordered it shut off.

Yeah, um, i'm not using the deathtrap in the future after that incident.

Melee squad posted with "stay close to station" next to the stairway?
Lever on "pull/r"?
forbid death items?

Should be plenty of slop room in the lower corridor...

8th galena

‘LegoLord’ was murdered by the guard for failing to make low boots.

26th galena

Okay, I really should have noticed the people trapped in the death trap tunnel earlier.

28th limestone

There’s been some trading done and a few minor ambushes, but we only lost a legendary woodcutter. Also, the king should show up soonish.

6th timber

Migrants!  They’re all insane. They’ll fit right in.

11th moonstone

Goblins.

ZZZZZZZZZZZZZ

13th moonstone

‘Jumpy’ is an elite marksdwarf now.

14th moonstone

ORCS!

Circle the wagons! Give me my shotgun! Get the womanfolk inside!

22nd moonstone

Goodbye military. We’re raising the drawbridge for now and the foreseeable future

They had 16 marksorcs...

I wouldn't suggest continuing from that save, unless you're eager to put DeathQuest at a disadvantage. From the sounds of his journal, our military is horribly crippled due to ignorance and mismanagement (no offense (name here)).

Actually, it's just the melee dwarves that keep dying. The marksdwarves are mostly fine, but i need a door to keep them upstairs.

EDIT: I don't take pictures because between the settings on the game's fullscreen mode and my lack of appropriate screencap software, my screencapture process goes like this:

1. hit F11
2. hit printscreen
3. hit F11 again
4. open up MS paint
5. paste
6. copy the part that's the actual game
7. open another MS paint window and hit paste again
8. save
9.repeat several times if somthing interesting is happening.
10. host
11. link
12. Realize it took maybe 15 min just to take 5 pictures and longer to host

That's what I was doing for mine, though I run in large (double standard) window mode.

I also remember turning on forbidding everything on death (to prevent civilians from charging into the deathtrap), so you might want to make sure that you don't have all the armor forbidden in the death corridor or something. Melee dwarves without armor and shields are extremely squishy, but I should have made enough chainmail + iron shields for everyone to have a set, especially if they have been dying off.

Your marksdwarves should be able to out-marks the orcs from the fortifications and towers, too, and melee dwarves should be able to engage them in the lower deathtrap corridor (since they will never be at range. It's a multi-purpose deathtrap!).

It sounds like you might want to just spend a bit of time training a new batch of military, though.
