I'm thinking that'll have to rely on mods.

That, and part of the whole attachment to hair is that it can grow back, meaning you aren't eternally doomed to shame.

Civs would try to make roads that went off cliffs.

This is approximately the mental image I got (pretend it's a dwarven caravan):

Cliffs were removed to deal with issue with roads.  Civs would try to make roads that went off cliffs.

Any plans on implenting something intelligent like actually cutting a ramp or something into it?
Yeah, that's the plan once climbing is implemented.

Alternately: The Brick Testament. It's a really fun look at what the bible would look like if interpreted literally. With Legos.
Just so I remember

Yeah, that's the plan once climbing is implemented.

Why does climbing have to be implemented? if roads are fixed, your non-flying adventurer can just take the damn road.

Not if there's not a road where he's going.

Bolded part obviously referring to ROADS.

Let me spell it out simply: What, exactly, does fixing roads have to do with implementing climbing? It seems like they're two separate things, and there's no reason climbing has to be implemented to allow cliffs as an OPTION.

There's a current thread in suggestions about bringing cliffs back: http://www.bay12games.com/forum/index.php?topic=27336.0

Does the "don't erode cliffs" worldgen parameter not work or something?

Relevant quotes from the past....

So, if you were curious about Armok, the page and binaries still exist, I just haven't figured out how/if I want to place the thing on the main page, since it isn't really a game, though some people found it entertaining.  You can find it HERE.<P>DF is about 7 releases ahead of where Armok was, at the sacrifice of some body detail, 3D graphics, random creatures, material detail and the half-baked magic, mostly.  I'm sure some, but not all, of the non-graphical information will enter DF at some point.  3D graphics is a time sink, and even tiles won't be added unless they are necessary for some reason.  However, the graphics weren't the reason I decided to move over to DF (it doesn't really take *that* long).  It was just the base code.  A lot of it is very old and horrible, and I didn't correct bugs often enough in my enthusiasm to add new features.  With DF, I'm going to try to be more responsible, though new features should go in regularly once it settles down a bit.

It's really hard to say, since a lot of the details are superfluous compared to adding more core features.  It would be nice to add tissues, though most likely not density of hair on your little finger.  The mechanics underlying the magic system might be the same, but that's just a little language with variables and statements and so on.  I'm not sure what else there is.  Maybe dwarves needs flesh balls.

So basically, Armok 1 was bloated with old code and stuff that made it too difficult, especially with the new features enthousiastically piled on top.

This actually proves how important "useless" hair and stuff are at this point.  Toady is not adding these features in wild enthousiam, he's adding them to make sure the underlying framework of the game stays as complete as possible.  You can tell by how enthousiastic his latest posts are.

He did change his mind on the hair on the pinky finger bit, but a lot has changed since then.  There's tissues and scarring and appearances now, so the hair on the pinky finger is now just part of the framework that allows cooler things like chipped claws, torn fur and braided beards.

When roads are fixed and climbing is implemented, cliffs will be added back in.

Why. Is. Climbing. Needed. For. It. To. Be. An. Option.

I don't know how much simpler I can make this question.

I'm tired of this.
Cliffs were "removed" for the most part due to civilizations trying to make roads off them.
That's the ONLY reason.
We had cliffs BEFORE roads were even implemented.
If we hadn't had them already, the climbing argument would be valid, but since we have, NO.
Climbing is NOT part of it.

Climbing is why he hasn't added them back in, as I understand it.  It's just what I remember seeing in the dev notes.
