Is that Toady is going to get caught up in all the minute details and the project will collapse like Armok.....  Stay focused on the major objectives bro!  I doubt hair growth will have much impact on gameplay etc.

I don't agree.
Having more minor & detailed features = + diversity = better gameplay.  :)

Unless it becomes such a burden that the major gameplay issues get losy in the scuffle and the system becomes unwieldy and cumbersom (more than it is).

**Attempts in vain to climb a tree with his stubbly limbs to hide from the onslaught**
I already mortally wounded you with a barrage of LEGOs.  You can't climb unless you're undead, in which case . . .

The flying LEGO minifigure axe strike the OP in the head!
The OP's head flies off in an arc!
I3erent, OP, has been struck down (again).

Edit: It seems like a good way to go would be to have a kind of universal framework for items, buildings and such. Like the ability to create new buildings, new items/item types, how those items are used... I suppose that would be in the works, though. Something about moving everything to the raws.

Yeah, it's a long term goal.  I post threads about it in hopes of making it not quite so long term.

I'm glad somebody else said this. I just got into DF about two months ago, so I'm a relative noob, but it's easily the most addictive, fascinating gaming experience I've had. So then I started getting very intrigued about what developments might be on the horizon... until I found the "development" page. Oh well, I'm still loving this game, and I trust that Toady had good instincts for what makes for compelling gaming, so I'm going to reserve judgment about how exciting dwarf hair can possibly be. I guess we'll see.

As far as I can tell, minor things like hair growth are just easy side effects of implementing more important things. They sort of fall into place, from what I gleaned of the dev page.

I don't know why, but I'm really psyched about the hair growth and scarring - people will look different from each other!  Yay!

Also, a lot of the new stuff has to do with wounds, and we all know that there has to be new and horrible ways for dwarves to die.

Different strokes, I guess.

No they wont they wil still look like the letter "E" and such and while hair is being implememented naturally a way to cut it will come sometime in the "future" perhaps as part of the adventure skills arc, If the "arc" thing is not soo last years design strategy.  Work on something that will affect gameplay.

Cliffs were removed to deal with issue with roads.  Civs would try to make roads that went off cliffs.

Any plans on implenting something intelligent like actually cutting a ramp or something into it?

Cliffs also made trouble for adventurers, since they can't climb. Once that and the other issues are worked out, I think he said he's bringing cliffs back (although I would guess not quite to the same extent as before, because it was a little ridiculous.)

Also, news flash, minor things don't take much time at all. Because they're minor. Additionally, things like this (probably) break save compatibility, so a lot of them are going in right now so we don't get broken saves every month or two (hopefully).

Hair and other things like that do affect gameplay, at least for some of us. If you want focus on mechanics to the exclusion of everything else, go play a standard RTS or something. That's what they do. You can come back when DF hits version 1.

Yes, DF is al about the details. If you wanna play something stripped to just what really matters, this is what every other game does today.

I couldn't agree more.

For gameplay impact, the immediate result will be your dwarves being able to heal their wounds realistically.  Hair is part of the framework that allows this, and adding hair now saves a lot of trouble later on.

Besides, soap might become useful now.  Dwarves will want to keep their beards clean.
I also read something about the hair framework supporting things like scales and feathers.  Dragons with a single weak spot in the scales, anyone?  Perhaps a weak spot caused by a previous battle with another megabeast.
Oh, and let's not forget paint layers on Bronze Colossi:
"You barely strike the Gold Colossus with your blade."
"Gold paint flakes fly everywhere!"
"The Bronze Colossus looks embarassed."

Yeah Rhodan that reminds of LOTR lol

Bard fires the black arrow at Smaug!
The flying black arrow glances off.
Smaug latches on to bards upper body!
Smaug shakes Bard by his upper body!
Bards !!head!! is torn off and remainds in Smaugs grip.

I hope that Toady makes a dwarf very unhappy if its beard is damaged or cutoff in battle.  Goblins might on occasion cut a dwarfs beard off rather then kill him in combat knowing that this is a mark of great shame to a dwarf.  Implementing this as an [HONOR] tag that can be attached to any body part of any creature to signify that it is the most 'valuable' part of the creature body and its loses/disfigurement is emotionally and socially crippling for them.  If this is implemented I would welcome hair much more.

Hehe, I can imagine where the humans would put their [HONOR] tags.
I can also imagine they won't feel very honorable after fighting something that comes up to their waist. With an axe.
