Use for (extreme) natural terrain features
« on: November 16, 2008, 11:36:34 am »

The only natural terrain feature that I can think of is useful are waterfalls - and they only give happiness to dwarves. How about caves, natural 20+ cliffs, glaciers, and similar stuff having some more impact on the fortress? Having a cave as a part of the fort might give also happiness and value (maybe even more if someone very special visited the cave in the past - like a king or something). How about very high hills (20+, as I had in one map, next to a volcano) having some special value - like rooms with windows on such a cliff having extra value, etc. And, of course, natural unmodified terrain having always more value than an artificial cliff..

The simulation requirements don't have to be high for this. You only check for the value of the room once. Some detection might need a small bit of processing power at generation but that's not supposed to be much.

Natural Stalactites and Stalagmites in the caves could act as the equivalent of statues (with randomly assigned quality levels to reflect natural beauty), designating a statue garden around them would be a simple way to work them into the happiness system.

Yes. This is a good example of what I was talking.

Cliffs have innate defense merit, but I like the 'views' idea.  Maybe not for the dwarves though...

It doesn't have to be positive - living in a glacier, if anything, ought to impose a constant "Was exposed to freezing cold lately" thought.

Though that ought to be filed under temperature, likely.
