The Dwarf Fortress Checklist of deeds. updated(4).

Everything that you need to do to fully experience DF without doing EVERYTHING.
Feel free to add to this thread:

(I'd prefer it if the checklist goals aren't too hard, but if you have enough of them, I'll just put it into a section of its own.)

Basic Goals: you gotta get them.

-Make it through the first winter
-Reach the Dwarven Economy
-Seiged for the first time
-Ambushed for the first time
-Have at least one champion in your military
-Kill a caravan of elves
-Over Complicate a simple task.
-Survive an Ambush
-Survive a Siege
-Experience emotion towards one of your dwarves
-Reach your fortress in adventure mode
-Kill a semi-megabeast in adventure
-Become the enemy of a civilization
-Find at least one underground feature (both, in dwarf mode, and adventure)
-Experience a tantrum spiral

Advanced:
-Fun with magma
-See every underground feature
-Water structure
-Mega-construction
-make a creature on your map extinct
-build an arena
-build an execution chamber
-Get through 5 Years in fortress mode
-Don't kill Migrants (is this really that hard?)
-Do something that makes you feel absolutely dwarven
-Get through an aquifer
-Fortress on "unsustainable" land
-Learn acsII graphics
-Wage war on all vanilla civs (excluding dwarves)
-Self-destruct a fortress
-kill a noble
-make soap
-get a king (HFS not counting)
-Survive a tantrum spiral (for the sake of percise definition, once you have a berserk dwarf and at least 3 tantrumers. This is open to debate).

Extra-hard:
-Reach 200 dwarves
-Smooth a mountain
-Do a Giga-construction (must span multiple z-levels, and have a large base)
-blot out the sun.
-Get through 10 years in fortress mode
-Defend your fortress Successfully without traps.


Extra-curicular: Overtime fun stuff.
-Play a mod
-Make your own creature
-invent a new weapon
-join a community fort
-Do a bloodline/succession game
-Challange fortress
   -Build an Above ground fortress.
-Run a community fortress
-Report a never before seen bug
-donate to Toady

Thats all I can think of right now...

I love how you put the flamebait right at the top of the list. ASCII sucks! *waves revolutionary flag and throws molotov* :P

Nice list. :) "Sea floor fortress" should be in the Extra hard category.

-Don't kill Migrants (is this really that hard?)
-Do something that makes you feel absolutely dwarven
-Get through an aquifer
-Fortress on "unsustainable" land
-Learn acsII graphics
-Wage war on all vanilla civs (excluding dwarves)
-Self-destruct a fortress
-kill a noble
-make soap
-get a king (HFS not counting) just need to offer something to caravan, but i cant afford another annoying noble :(

Extra-hard:
-Reach 200 dwarves does 180 dwarfs running around + 230 in coffins count too? i hope soo :>

So that is off then?
I want to make this as universal as possible, but I do think acsII is part of the experience.

Yellow (one instance) is half-completed.
Orange is attempted/underconstruction but considered a failure (despite the most hostile location I could find with a bottomless pit the only wildlife I got was IN THE PIT, which made it kinda boring even though it made a neat arena feature: pit traps--"oops, you dodged into one of the four holes in the floor, bye bye, you lose").
Red are incomplete.

You missed "Flood the world/local area with water/magma from an infinite source."
Especially fun is to revisit the area later with a non-breathing magma-proof adventurer and walk with the fluid until you reach an ocean, even though it kills your computer. But flooding the world  is worth it!

And if Unsustainable means map-spanning glacier without magma, then I've completed the basic and advanced lists.

Erm, shouldn't "Learn acsII graphics" be in the "Basic Goals" section?  :P
Once I got used to the ASCII display method, the game became easily understandable...all parts of it.  ;)

Naw, once I went graphic I never wanted to go back.

Mostly because I could say "Hey Goat, Hey Goblin"

Instead of: "OH MY!!! This mountain is swarming with goblins!!!"
I dont get why people always bring that one up, I have never confused a goat for a goblin or vice versa so why is it the example everyone uses. At least try to find 2 things you could confuse that:
a) will actually harm your fort from confusing them (goblin goat fufills this)
b) Are hard to tell the difference between (Goblin goat doesn't fufill this)

It can be confusing....just one example from the vanilla game:
Creatures being displayed by "C":
bronze colossus
cave crocodile
cougar
cow
cyclops
giant cave swallow
one-humped camel
two-humped camel
saltwater crocodile
Creatures being displayed by "c":
cat
cave swallowman
cheetah
giant cheetah
chimpanzee
coelacanth

Now just imagine...you mod in 40 more creatures and all of their names will start with "c".
