It can be confusing....just one example from the vanilla game:
Creatures being displayed by "C":
bronze colossus
cave crocodile
cougar
cow
cyclops
giant cave swallow
one-humped camel
two-humped camel
saltwater crocodile
Creatures being displayed by "c":
cat
cave swallowman
cheetah
giant cheetah
chimpanzee
coelacanth

Of that entire list only ones (all of two: cow and cat) that aren't hostile/dangerous to my dwarves and comes in two colors (dark red and gray) while everything else comes in one color each, none of which are gray or dark red.

Mods: I don't play mods.

-join a community fort
-Do a bloodline/succession game

Quote from: The Dwarf Fortress Checklist
GREEN=Have done
RED=Have not done
BLUE=Consfusion, like kinda done.
Basic Goals: you gotta get them.

-Make it through the first winter
-Reach the Dwarven Economy
-Seiged for the first time
-Ambushed for the first time

-Have at least one champion in your military
-Survive an Ambush
-Survive a Siege
-Experience emotion towards one of your dwarves (This was originally red, but then I remembered anger was an emotion)
-Reach your fortress in adventure mode
-Kill a semi-megabeast in adventure
-Become the enemy of a civilization
-Find at least one underground feature (both, in dwarf mode, and adventure)

Advanced:
-Fun with magma (I've seen it, used it for forging, died by the imps, but no magma pumping or transporting yet)
-See every underground feature
-Water structure
-Mega-construction
-make a creature on your map extinct
-build an arena
-build an execution chamber
-Do something that makes you feel absolutely dwarven

-Get through an aquifer (I found somewhere the aquifer wasn't, nothing awesome)
-Fortress on "unsustainable" land (Started one on the ice, it died before the end of winter.  Reclaimed it, currently has ~20 dwarves, haven't played it in a while.  Course, it was in a mod that made wildlife even worse, and the terrain was haunted.)
-Learn acsII graphics (Not really certain what this means, but I've built a mod)

-Wage war on all vanilla civs (excluding dwarves)
-Self-destruct a fortress (I've abandoned funtioning fortresses, and set thing up initially that would greatly increase the chance of fortress failure [see explanation to unstainable terrain], but not much else)
-kill a noble (Adventure mode counts, right?)

(color=red)-make soap
-get a king (HFS not counting)(/color)

Extra-hard:
(color=red)-Reach 200 dwarves
-Smooth a mountain
-Do a Giga-construction (must span multiple z-levels, and have a large base)
-blot out the sun.(/color)

Extra-curicular: Overtime fun stuff.
(color=green)-Play a mod
-Make your own creature
-invent a new weapon(/color)
(color=blue)-join a community fort (I've donated my name to dwarves, but never actually played one)(/color)
(color=red)-Do a bloodline/succession game(/color)
(color=blue)-Challange fortress (the fortress on the glacier, but not a formal challenge or anything)(/color)
(color=red)-Run a community fortress
-Report a never before seen bug
-donate to Toady (Sorry Toady)(/color)

(color=green)Bonus Points, to make up for some of the (color=red)RED(/color) stuff:
-Create a mod (Sage Vs. Sodom mod)
-Share the mod with the community
-Update the mod
-Make mod compatable with a graphic and tile set (the Mike Mayday set)

I guess I'm just an ambitious human, weaseling my way out of the Dwarven mindset.

I don't get far in adventure mode since it feels meh and I always get killed by a wolf.

Fortress mode stuff is mainly because I always abandon after the first couple years, out of boredom or problems.

Maybe add a few like:

Basic:
Kill a caravan of elves
Over Complicate a simple task.

Advanced:
Get through 5 Years in fortress mode
Don't kill Migrants

Extra Hard:
Get through 10 years in fortress mode
Defend your fortress Successfully without traps.

Extra: Build an Above ground fortress.
