Construction projects are incomplete, but everything else is in place. There is nothing left to do other than begin the campaign--Reconnaissance, lines of supply, units, roles, and plans are laid out and put in place.

"Masi, are we--"

"No." Icand's voice shot from across the room. As usual, he didn't appear to be paying attention, but was still quicker to the punch than Masi, having answered a question Nasha hadn't even asked yet.

Nasha blinked. "What?" She was used to it, just not used to being targetted by it. Masi looked over to Icand, intrigued to here the explanation for his outburst.

Icand closed his ledger carefully, before turning to lean on his desk, without getting to his feet. "You're not going to fight in this war, Nasha. Someone needs to stay here to hold the fort, tend the crops, and make sure that the newborns don't go feral. You can brief the scouts when they arrive, while you're at it."

Nasha found herself suddenly angry, but tried to squash the feeling. "'While I'm at it'? I've been training all winter, just like everyone else has. Is this really necessary? I'm far from the worst fighter here."

Masi sighed, though it sounded a little more like a hiss. Icand waved a hand at him, and proceeded to stare at the front wall while Masi spoke. "It's not a matter of incompetence. Our only fighters worse than you aren't reliable at all, and it's not that you're not trying, you're just too slow and get tired too easily and there's nothing you can do about it. Besides, it's not going to be easy to prepare meals on the front, and you're going to end up miserable either way, so you might as well make yourself useful to yourself and everyone else while you're at it."

It was hard to stay angry at Masi. Nasha found herself more amused than offended.  "Fine. I'll stay. Just promise me that you'll bring me something nice, when you get around to the looting and pillaging. I'll leave you boys to handle the battleplans, I'm going to reorganize the kitchens." Nasha stormed out in spite of herself.

Icand drummed his fingers on his desk for a moment afterward. Masi seemed to be inspecting the closed door. Bored, Icand spoke first. "I'm telling you, camoflage is the way to go, here. These things are seven to eight feet tall, we're not going to impress or intimidate them no matter what we do. They can't hurt us if they can't see us."

Masi sat back down in his chair, heavily. The argument had long grown tiresome. "Ideally, we should want to provoke them into a battle on our terms, and slaughter their army wholesale. What you propose is a good way to drive out civilians, but sophisticated military personnel are  not going to abandon their posts until we clearly demonstrate our superiority. Our opponents may be large, but that is just more fuel for their funeral pyres."

There was a clicking sound from across the room. Icand bit into his pen. "As long as no one dies trying to prove your point, I see no harm in the reserves being set up your way. I'll draw up the plans when Oic--" He coughed. "--Oce gets back. Anyway, please--camoflage and stealth are our plan A. Go make sure no one is planning to do anything stupid."

Masi let out a short laugh and left. Icand pulled out his book--"The Art and History of Katytan Hill Fighting"--stared at it on his desk for a moment, then banged his head on it twice, swept it away into the wall, and sank into his chair to sulk, silently mouthing a continous stream of obscenities. Whether she was real or just a dream, this was all Katyn's fault.

The northern army waits for any action and constantly sends scouts into the tiles next to them and they return back regularly so they dont show on the map.

The demigod stopped moving when he finally came above ground. Erak heard a loud breathing sound and a large sigh of satisfaction echoed from the armor next to him.

"ITS BEEN A LONG TIME SINCE I'VE BEEN ABOVEGROUND. EVERYTING SMELLS SO FULL OF LIFE AND VITALITY. ITS ENVIGORATING FOR ONE WHO HAS LIVED FOR MILLENIA UNDERGROUND IN A SINGLE CHAMBER."

"So what do you require?"

"ONLY A SUITABLE STUDENT. I FEEL THAT THERE IS SOMEONE HERE THAT WILL SUFFICE PERFECTLY."

"Well, we dont have any real magic users..."

"THATS BECAUSE MOST OF THE MAGIC YOU KNOW OF IS FALSE MAGIC. NOT TRUE MAGIC THAT I KNOW OF AND WHAT I WILL TEACH."

The demigod walked among the villagers, looking into the eyes of everyone it walked near before stopping before a woodcarver.

"YOU HAVE THE TOUCH OF TRUE MAGIC IN YOU. STAND."

The woodcarver stood hurriedly and boldly looked back at the demigod. He was shaking slightly when he spoke:

"Are you one of the gods? What do you want from me?"

"I AM BUT ONLY A SON OF A GOD AND MORTAL, AND I WANT YOU TO COME WITH ME SO I CAN TEACH YOU. WHAT IS YOUR NAME, O CARVER OF WOOD?"

"M-my name is Joath. What are you going to teach me?"

They walked back to the mines, Erak nodding encouragingly to Joath and he heard the demigod reply before they entered.

"I WILL TEACH YOU ABOUT AN ESSENCE OF LIFE ITSELF, YOUNG APPRENTICE."

Erak sighed that everything had come out so well, and was about to go back to a hut when one of the guards walked up to him and spoke to him:

"We're being watched. Walk with me to your hut and we can talk more."

"What do you think they are?"

"We dont know sir. Since they are reddish in color, perhaps they are magma creatures from the volcanoes in the mountains?"

"Do they seem skilled in weaponry?"

"We don't know sir, but they seem very intelligent and can learn quick enough. If we are going to do something, we should do it now before it's too late."

Erak sighed deeply before slumping into a chair and holding his head in a hand for some time. And he thought that everything was going to be fine...

"Ok, here's what we are going to do. Me and 15 others are going to go meet them and I will talk to them in person. Perhaps they are allied with the Hitengu and we don't know about it yet? But then again, they might be living machines of battle and could be hostle, so if they try anything, we're going to run back here before anyone gets killed. If need be, leave me behind and I'll try to lose them in the mountains."

"But sir-"

"But nothing! I care for my people and if they attack because of something bad that I say, then I alone will pay for it! Hopefully, there wont be many of them if it comes to a fight and we seem to have superior gear so we should be able to win if they dont try anything tricky. I just hope they are friendly so it wont come to a slaughter..."

Uchiwakamaru and Danalof rent some wyverns from the elven watchpost. They travel further northwards, with only minor complications:

The travel had lasted hours now. The steady up and down of the wyverns rocked the two wanderers up and down. The ground lay underneath them, a sea of trees, throwing waves in the wind. Uchiwakamaru was clinging to the wyvern like one who clings to the edge of a cliff. His face was a nice addition to the green sea of trees waving underneath them.
"Feeling all right there?", asked Danalof concerned.

"Of course. As you can clearly see I am enjoying the fresh air and the marvelous view over the forest." Uchiwaka shackily raised into an upright position. "Ugghh..."
And then went back to clinging

"You know, I might have something in my backpack that could help you with your... green complexion."
" Nahhh....I told you I am invincible. This ride is most enjoyable ! (cont)
Laughing out loud like a maniac, he sat up straight again and spread his army wide, riding free-handed.

"AHAHAHAHAHA"

"Well then I hope you can survive a 100m fall, which is what is going to happen to you if you keep fooling around like that." Muttered Danalof angrily.
Not bothering with that remark, Uchiwakamaru stood up, standing on the back of the wyvern, riding it like a surfboard.
"Oh this is nothiiiiii......"
Only to plummet down. Danalof was already trying to hasitily cast some spells to catch him, but Uchiwaka just flapped his wings and caught himself. Clumsily, he climbed back unto the wyvern.
"See ? I am invincible! No way such a minor thing couOUGGH"
Quickly he turned to the left, and unpleasant sounds were filling the air.
"Seems even 'invincible' people get air-sick. Even bird people who are _meant_ to fly in the first place."
Uchiwakamaru turned around, the corners of his mouth showing clear evidence oh what happened. He made his fingers to a V-sign and grinned widely.
"Me? Airsick? Tommyrot!"

"Well, seems you are enjoying it.", said Danalof, "dripping" with sarcasm "Nothing to it then."

The troops were, as part of their training, practicing fighting unarmed. For this purpose, they had been given permission to morph the rock on their fists into a mace- like shape.

Koratis dodged a blow from Antokiatis, returning a gentle hit into the other's arm. They weren't serious about this, as neither liked unarmed combat, but both pretended to spar to avoid any unwanted attention from their superior.

"So, what do you think of the war?", whispered Koratis amidst the grunts and cracks around them.

In the frigid rain and spray the men and women of Ikyon gathered in packs, held at bay by the 1st Army, trying to get a glimpse of the man they had come to see. Something crackled above the crowd and slowly their restlessness subsided, filled with a feeling of awe. Strange instruments blared bizzare tunes of the past, never meant to see the light of today. The Honor Guard came first, led by the immaculate Judge-Magister Octavius, long robes fell from their shoulderguards, the striking colors of which matched the glass eye of each helmet. Octavius reached the dais, slowly climbing it's steps, kneeling before the flag of Ikyon he bowed his head in respect. In one fluid movement he turned to the hastily erected podium that stood on the dais. His voice like a whisper at first, soon with some crackling it seemed to boom from the walls themselves.

"Servants of Ikyon I, Judge-Magister Octavius Razael of this glorious state, stand before you not as your leader today but as a servant of your will, today you have chosen a man to lead you in our quest for glorious salvation, today I present to you the newly appointed Imperial Chancellor, Mairael Fabricius Gurges Garanicus."

The crowd suddenly breaks into an uproar as the instruments begin to play the bizarre Ikyonian hymn. Slowly down the path previously traveled by Octavius comes Mairael, "Order-Bringer" a title the peasants had given him, the man they believed was destined to lead them out of this abysmal dark age their reckless ancestors had brought upon them. Slowly the old man climbed the dais, Octavius minding the man's new title stepped back and allowed the Chancellor to take the Podium. Slowly the man gathered his strength, and his voice began to boom like Octavius's. Smiling beneath his helmet to himself he realised this man was one of the most uncharismatic Ikyonians he had ever met, he would never have been heard without the illusion cast by the Podium.

"We must now consider the period which is just drawing to a close as almost the last stage of our state's resurrection, and prepare ourselves to finish worthily the marvelous design of the elect of twenty generations, the completion of which Decretum has reserved for this fortunate age. Yes, young men, Ikyon owes to you an undertaking which has merited the applause of the universe. You have conquered and you will conquer still, because you are prepared for the tactics that decide the fate of battles. You are not unworthy of the men who entered the ranks of an ancient Ikyonian Malael, and who contended not in vain with the proud conquerors of Almesh. To this wonderful page in our state's history another more glorious still will be added."

Slowly the Chancellor lowers his weary frame from the Podium and returns from where he came, to his lush livings and his servants.
