What happened to cliffs anyway?
« on: November 15, 2008, 07:28:46 pm »

There are no cliffs anymore. While this makes adventure mode easier, it makes for less impressive landscape, especially as I sit here comparing my fortress in this version to the epic one I started in a previous one, which had a 27-z canyon and a giant eagle hovering maybe 10 above that, watching carefully for delicious elves.

Change max/min elevation, reduce errosion and probably something more.
Someone experienced with the parameters will probably help you

The rich conservative oil giants caused some climate change, which slowly killed off the extreme cliffs. They later hunted endangered Giant Eagles on the now smooth cliffs.

But in seriousness, you can check on embark. Although I have never tested if it shows straight cliffs or just relative elevation(Difference between the lowest tile of land and the highest.)

I would bet money Andrew has edited things retroactively, except I can't prove anything because it was edited retroactively.

I've made hundreds of worlds and I've yet to see an actual straight-edge old-style cliff that wasn't part of a water-related formation like a waterfall or ocean edge, regardless of what world gen parameters I've used.

I think Toady had to take them out to allow for historical events. Something about making it so the entities could get to other sites, I think. I miss 'em.

Somehow, that fills me more with dread than anticipation.  It's like being told that someone's exhuming your favorite grandparent and they're going to try to make her into a cyborg stripper.

I've tried quite a bit to make steep cliffs like days of old, with no success.

Changing any world parameters doesn't help. Checking elevation/cliff indicator on world view mode doesn't work (high cliff indicator only seems to indicate how high the ground goes, so yeah, the same as elevation).

The only ways I've found are either get an open chasm (or open it yourself...) or be lucky enough to get a river cutting through some hills. The ground either side and above the river will always be without ramps. Oh and sometimes capped volcanos can produce a small patch of unramped areas.

Hey look, someone referenced my thread. I feel all special inside.

For the record, I made that thread before I realised it wasn't a bug that there were no cliffs. And there's no other useful information regarding how to find them there than there is here (that I posted at least).

Oh and yeah. Best way is to carve cliffs out of the very mountains themselves.
