rocks
« on: November 15, 2008, 04:57:47 am »

fry em, cook em, stick em in a stew...

wait no thats potatos :P

how do you manage your rocks? do you hide em? you you quantum dump them? do you turn the surface world into a huge stone garden? do you build elaborate underground labernyth stone stockpiles? maybe you build a huge tower just to be rid of those darn rocks.

discuss rocks

-edit: forgot to say what i do :P. i use the quantum dump, sure its an easy cop out but who builds rock storage anyways? and leaving them everywhere is troublesome and not able to satisfy my sensitive senitivites.

Hide any that annoy me for example when I have one on the same tile as something else and it is making it flash. otherwise I ignore them.

i acually use a multi quantum dump, a single tile for each diffrent type of rock (one tile for uncommon small amounts of rock) and activate them based on what i'm collecting, then i forbid them all and only reclaim the kind of rock i want to use for things like doors and tables at the time.

-edit, i am so quantum dumb >.<

I prefer to turn them into mugs.  It takes a long time, but it's a great sense of accomplishment when your fortress is finally clear.

If rocks are in an area I'm developing into housing or industry, I herd them into stockpiles and use them to make additions to the constructed castles I always build (now that it's easy to mass designate constructions. Thank you Toady.)

If they're in an area I've dug out but am not using currently, leave them lie. They're just rocks. The beardlings will fetch them if they want them.

Rocks pfft, you're all a bunch a whiners.

I just let them chill there until they become blocks for some construction, which makes me lazy. :P

I have rock stockpiles near my "public" mason and stonecrafter workshops, and a few small, single-type ones behind doors near each private workshop.

If rocks are in a place where they're interfering with my ability to tell what's going on, blocking a stockpile, or prohibiting the growth of a tower-cap forest, they get quantum dumped and reclaimed later.

A 10x10 stone stockpile surrounded by six mason shops set to produce stone blocks till the cows come home. And I'm still always short on blocks for my constructions.

Sizeable stone stockpiles, with small ones for production of specific blocks.  In the mines, surplus is forbidden.  In populated areas, it's dumped.  Dumping locations are generally in the river or chasm- always beyond easy retrieval.

Quantum dump into purpose-built shafts, mostly, accessible through staircases - I think of them as stone silos where stone is stored until it's needed, which makes it seem sensible and not very much like cheating - in my mind at least. :)

I usually never chasm rocks. They're the basis of dwarven life, and not to be wasted needlessly.

Also often stone stockpiles near workshops that require them, i.e. the ones for the legendary stonecrafters you always end up with, they chew through rocks like they're popcorn and create insane value.

Any that are even vaguely useful (obsidian, flux stone, a rock that is a decent color, etc) I sort according to type. Near the ones I plan on using as construction material, I set up a string of temporary mason workshops and set all my soapmakers and cheesemongers to work converting them into blocks. Useless and ugly stone gets drawbridged into oblivion or dropped into a canal.

I'm thinking about modding things so that you can take any stone to the local mason and have it converted into any of a handful of other stones: one for each color DF can run. Though I would be surprized if some forum elder hasn't already done so.

if i need an area cleared of rocks, i designate a nearby 1x1 garbage zone, dump them all, and then reclaim the pile.
