EVERYONE IS FULL OF PAINT! Ignore.

How does one use a smelter reaction to generate animals? I've heard it can be done.

You don't.  Simply put.  Any animal that comes out of a smelter is vermin.  Cows from smelter = (tame cow) aka vermin cow.
