So now that Toady is working on hair...
« on: November 14, 2008, 08:18:53 pm »

I have to ask. Do female dwarves have beards. Im pretty sure that the consensus was that in the DF world they did, but I dont think that was based on anything other than them having the same icon, if there was actually something that said that they do disregard this.

But this is the time that Toady would be putting that in code so we have to wonder if they have beards.

Like I always said.

Honey if you don't want to grow a beard like the rest of us you don't have to.

Something among those lines...

Oh yeah and because hair can come off with skin and body parts its theoretically possible for a dwarf to get his beard cut off in combat. Instant tantrum spiral, I think so.

Of course, since hair will grow forever, under lazy administrators like me it'll be hard to tell where the beard ends and the rest of the dwarf starts.

But yes, at last, the canonical word-o-dev on Schrodinger's beards.

Followed by reams of poorly typed suggestion threads arguing for the opposite answer, and several completing mod packs to toggle female dwarf beards and add HFS*20 metals.

Personally I would prefer that they didnt have beards, but on formal occasions they could tie their long hair under their chins to look like one.

Dwarves have [PREFSTRING:beards].  From this I conclude that DF's default dwarves all have beards, with the possible exception of babies and young children.

Well in the current system there would be no way to differentiate between male and female having different appearances so you cant really come to a conclusion based on that.

Actually the easiest way to tell the difference between male and female is that Females are BATMAN!!! in the sense that they use horrible undertrained children to fight their battles for them and then throw tantrums when their stupidity actually gets them killed.

Traditionally, beards on all members of the species is supposed to be one of the major distinguishing features of the dwarves.  However, DF is quickly becoming very un-traditional (cannibal Elves . . .)

However, I like the idea of all dwarves having beards, because I read Terry Pratchett, which is also very un-traditional (although that has nothing to do with why I like it).

A dwarf witoute a beard is no real dwarf. Dwarves have complete gender equality. Therefore...

Well, whichever way Toady goes, the female dwarves in my games won't have them. The idea of women with beards just bugs me too much. *shrug*

A dwarf without a beard is a gnome.
Note: Some gnomes actually have small beards, but nowhere near enough to be called a dwarf.

Also, gnomes compensate for their lack of beards with colorful pointy hats.
