Stockpiles being ignored
« on: November 12, 2008, 04:16:11 pm »

Newer player here. I'm running 40d on Windows, and a slightly older variant on Mac OS X. I have noticed something peculiar on each version. From time to time, once my dorfs get settled in, they will start ignoring stone stockpiles outright. I don't know what, exactly, the trigger is, but all of a sudden there will be huge messes of stone in the newest tunnels, and I'll have upwards of 20 dorfs just sitting around doing bugger all.

I know they have stone hauling enabled, because I've seen them do it before. They will also haul some other items. But not stone. I've been through the forums a little, tried resetting the stockpile settings and removing/replacing the stockpiles themselves, and adding new stockpiles, but to no avail. The stones just sit there, cluttering things up.

Normally, I'd just pass this off as odd, but it has happened on both my Mac and my Windows worlds (I haven't ported worlds between them, either), and it's getting kind of annoying.

Any thoughts?

I thought I saw this happening a couple times, but couldn't find any rhyme or reason to the occurences.

I have noticed that it seems to only happen after I have a dining room/meeting hall, but I discount that a little because the dwarves seem perfectly happy to haul other things.

Check your (o)rders menu to make sure that stone hauling is enabled.  It is possible that you accidently turned it off.  It is also possible that some obscure bug causes it to get turned off.  Such a bug would probably be very hard for Toady to find without a way to make it happen.

Thanks for that, Veroule. You were right. Not quite sure how it happened, though - I leave the orders screen alone for the most part.
