Sounds very ambitious and promising. I cannot remember any game where the developers tried such a radical realism (including permadeath). I'm intrigued.

There will be no restarts of time or anything else.  Obviously there will be many tweaks for balance along the way, especially in the beginning.

The first children will be the first players to sign up.  I'm hand-picking a few people from the forum who I think will be able to give good constructive criticism, to sign up first.  After about a week or two, I'll open up sign-up for everyone.

I'm getting excited as well, and nervous.  I just hope there are not any major problems, and I also hope that players actually like the game.  I know there will be a lot of "this aspect isn't as good as Cantr" or "I like this feature better than Cantr", but overall, I hope people can appreciate what I have built.

One thing for players to keep in mind, is that the game is still very much a work-in-progress.  There are a hundred million ideas in my head (and suggested on the forums) for making the game better.  It's not a matter of "if" I will build it, but "when".  Time is my only barrier.

Wow, latitude based weather?  It seems like a little bit of DF is rubbing off on you.

Yeah, there are a lot of things in Dwarf Fortress that have inspired FTO.  Body-part damage, weather, and especially the history feature (which will come along a little later), are all DF features I really love.  In fact, you could basically say I am trying to take Toady's vision for the ultimate fantasy-world simulator to a browser-based MMORPG.

Micro102: I posted a reply to your question on the FTO forums, here (see the second post)

not excatly what i meant. let me see of i have this straight. your game takes buildings and the more you build the more they add status. having 20 towers and 100 archers (not sure if you can ave archers but just go with it) would give a nice defense bonus....but it would not change whether you wanted all the towers lined up or spread out across your fortress. basically having building increases status, there is no work done in arranging them for a purpose.

Getting really deep into the tactics and strategy of combat isn't really the focus of the game.  It would probably be a whole game in itself if I had focused on just your city layout and choke points, etc (see Dwarf Fortress).  It's aimed more at player character interaction within societies, with an emphasis on ambiguity, not on the details.  This is because I want players to be able to interpret things their own way more often than not.

When I say that the game has player-built cities, I define that more with the social aspects of it, not the logistics.  Players communicating to create something important, while taking part in heiarchial roles.

Personally I think the first thing you should fix is the Hunger problems.

Honestly... what were you thinking? This is the message it sends to players

"Sorry, you didn't play yesterday... So you starve to death!"

Note: This is based on information given on the site and my interpretation there of. So if it isn't the case then my post is really about changing that.

Starving to death actually takes a very long time.  Some realism just has to be sacrificed so the game can be playable.  You don't have to be logging in every day to eat.

Alright then, though your website implies it could happen in the time it takes to complete a single craft (sure that craft is a keep... but still). So you may, may, want to look into that.

Then again, I consider Infinity to be overly ambitious, something that might easily spell it's downfall.

I have a suggestion, please tell me what you think:

Because when you die you basically have to start all over again. Can someone who has been playing for a long time or have a long lasting character who dies become a child/baby who is gifted/Savant/Genius and thus will gain skill very quickly until he reaches his old point in skill?

Not so much that death is superfluous though.

I'm more curious how you plan on financing this project.

An interesting idea.  Kind of reminds me of how some religions view reincarnation; coming back in slightly better circumstances than your previous life.

I don't know though, it could give an advantage to people who have had many characters (which could mean some could just commit suicide several times until they get uber-powerful).

I'm hoping that players will be happy living a well role-played character, leaving your legacy to your children (which could mean, passing on a powerful weapon), and watching the results of your characters actions through future generations.

I mean, how cool would it be to have died as a regular peasant in the game, and then (as a new character) hear others talk highly of your past character of how he/she influenced them or helped them.

It's kind of like how Dwarf Fortress works now.  We start a fortress, it gets destroyed, but we can still go back and visit it, and view the history log.

I'm more curious how you plan on financing this project.

I'm doing this as a hobby for now, and I don't see a time when there will be a charge for playing.  If people like the game and would like it to see it keep getting better, then I appreciate any donations (servers do cost money after all :)).  My main satisfaction comes just from doing something I love.
