Visual novels
« on: November 12, 2008, 06:59:31 am »

Okay, people, let me tell you off a terrible news.

I have abandoned DF (for the time being), or any other RTS and simulator.
I now play Visual novels (translated, freeware ones)...

Is this a traversty?

It is in no way a travesty.

Let me see...

Arthur's Teacher Trouble

There is another one about Arthur who plays a game called deep dark sea too much and then breaks the computer.

Thruth be known I don't know what a visual novel is... it sounds very slangy... such as when people say Zelda is an RPG

Ohhh... So basically static picture games.

Nope...

I do know a lot of point and click adventures, but the average gamer today doesn't believe in them anymore.

Actually, it's like novel, with emphasis on story, not gameplay.

Japanese, eh? I still learning it. Damn, why did I get out of the Extra Curriculer again?

Well Fate/stay Night, while not freeware is good in my opinion.
But then again I think anything by Type-Moon is good.

(On a somewhat related matter: I'm still trying to get my hands on School Days.)

I actually played a very fine english visual novel recently called Masq. It's very well written and PC Gamer put it in their top 100 games of all time. Give it a google and you can get it legit for free (for 10 playthroughs)

Yeah, Narcissu and True Remembrance are freeware that have been translated by Insani.

Google them both, however they are not a true Adventure game, but like Novels. Yeah, novels.

From my experience yes... Only it has more text.

Ouch.  My eyes are watering just thinking about squinting at a wall of text on my computer for hours on end.

Ohh don't worry not all visual novels have a lot of text... (In fact your standard RPG usually contains more then your standard Visual Novel)

This is usually what happens

Girl: "I think I like you"

Chose an Option
-Flirt
-Kiss
-Slap

You chose Flirt

Girl: "He he he" *Heart goes above her head*

You do this for a few hours and the ending will be of her chosing you in what should be the most anti-climatic ending EVER!!! (usually of her just saying she loves you with a still picture of her looking hot or kidnapping you)

Alright this is an exageration... but it is to say that don't expect a visual novel to involve THAT much reading (or in depth story >.>) so don't take it as a turn off from the genre as a whole.

I've heard the Phoenix Wright games described as visual novels, or like them.  I care less for Apollo Justice, but love the first three.
