Thrown artifacts disappear!
« on: November 12, 2008, 12:39:28 am »

I'm stalking through a kobold cave, when I find a bowkobold. My first idea was to throw Burdenbroke, an artifact steel sword. Sure enough, it's a one hit kill. I go to pick my sword back up, only to realize that upon impact, it poofed out of existence. Clearly, this is a problem.

It probably re-materialized wherever you picked it up first or something.

Yeah, dropped artifacts seem to home back to the location or bin which you first pulled them out of.  If you pick up an artifact and move a few tiles away from the bin and drop it, it will be in the bin when you go back to look.

Carrying the bin with you might have some interesting effects, though I don't think it has been tested.

Playing a cheesemaker in an average Fortress 'round here would be. Freaking. Terrifying.

...Say what?  How am I just now hearing about this?

I'll need an artifact, a bin, and a lot of muscles.  It's experiment time.

You can basically duplicate artifacts to your heart's content.  It's not so much that the artifact reappears in the bin -- rather, it never leaves in the first place.

There's no duplication, sadly. I went back to the bin, and picked up another one. The one in my hand disappeared, so it was like the artifact was toying with me. The new one still had all the old blood spatters. I figured it was just an illusion that I was picking it up at all.

Probably stems from the fact that Artifacts cannot be removed in fortress mode.

Not being an expert on this I rate "probably" to be between 100% to -20% of certainty

There was an old bug involving infinite artifact duplication. The fix has made things even more of a mess, if possible. Thus, things like this.

What if we use an artifact bin?

The space time continuum will rupture due to the fact that you will find the bin is, in fact, inside ANOTHER bin, that bin is... itself. Suddenly you will realise that life revolves around the bin and its very existence, you will treasure the bin only to wake up and find that it was all a dream. You get up, pull a cigar of the nearest talking bush and wander to the nearest insane asylum.

...

...

Huh?
