The only military I've got in a haunted forest, Urist has been patrolling outside the fortress walls for one full year now:
*edit*
there was an indecent with a Fire Imp. I haven't figured out if Fire Imp meat will set things on fire or if the imp set a dwarf on fire who then immolated the kitchens (quite a blaze - the stockpiles smoldered for more than a year). Somewheres about 3/4 of the fortress' population then decides its time for a snack, somehow manage to all pile into there in about 3 seconds of RL time, and as I had not yet realized the kitchens were in fact on fire . . .
All the survivors tantrum. Urist gets pissed off because his friend Nil died so he takes it out on the dwarf next to him, his other friend Obok, killing him instantly. In the days to come, Urist realizes what a good chum ol' Obok was and starts to feel a certain way about life in general. A cow got between him and Death, and Urist cassually loped its head off while on his way out of the fortress (before he goes berserk!) and onto eternal patrol.
Three other dwarves survived the tantrum spiral and are doing a brisk business in the skull totem decorated with bone trade.
The Dwarves of Mirrorpack have managed to make an impenetrable fortress w/ an entry that uses hatch covered channels and pressure plates to force hostiles into a pathing loop through a trapped and fortified hallway and the hallway itself can be sealed w/ a bridge near the outdoor entrance to trap things inside or keep them out. So Urist's march is really rather unnecessary, but he dosen't really care about anything anymore, takes joy in slaughter, and is just ecstatic to be bashing skeletons.
