Mighty Record Keeping Warriors
« on: November 09, 2008, 10:46:09 pm »

So, becoming legendary in a skill makes a dwarf's base stats very high, right? And if you assign your bookkeeper/hoardmaster to keep a perfect record of stocks, they will constantly be updating the stockpiles, which means their record keeping skill will be constantly used, which in turn means it will reach legendary in a short amount of time.
So I have a plan to insert potential recruits into the postion of hoardmaster so that their base stats skyrocket. Is there any drawback to this?

I find this works really well ... for the first dwarf.

After the stocks have made it to perfect, the work required to keep them perfect isn't as significant, so as time goes on, the hordemaster position is less and less efficient about providing skill-ups.

For training large amounts of dwarves, dry pumps are useful. Just build lots of screw pumps everywhere and dwarves will buff up in between other jobs.

Or occasionally instead of other jobs.

Can't wait for an option to set priorities for tasks.

Alternatively let them build social skills

Makes for a fun time when all the troops die in some freak accident too

Are you sure about this ?

My records have achieved the maximum precision looong ago, yet my Bookkeeper / Hoardmaster barely leaves his office, always having the "Update Records" job tasked.
He's long since gone legendary, so i don't know if he's getting any XP. Never used this for military training either.
But he definitely does not care about the records being perfectly precise already.

Then your Dwarves are hard workers who just can not wrap their minds around the concept of the 'break'. Armok forbid. Speaking of which, where is he now?

You can keep ordering them to collect sand (30) and removing it from the list once it's been approved forever. It's quite slow in the beginning, but the speed increases exponentially.

They do occassionally do record keeping even after you have perfect records, so maybe telling a dwarf to do nothing but record keeping with all other work disabled and no meeting hall to socialize will do the trick.

Any skill increase boosts a random stat. AFAIK, there is no link between the skill a dwarf is using and the stat that gets boosted.

Dwarves get such good stats through accounting by engraving all the tallies into the granite tables with their fingers.  Makes for strong arms, callouses, and the type of arthritis that makes them stumble around dodging attacks.
