Firearms

So I've been thinking of modding in some muskets for the dwarves and other assorted firearms to the other races.

How do I go by doing this? I've tried modifying the crossbow to no avail :( Are there any mods that already DO have firearms that I can sort of take apart for my df? (search yielded nothing :()

One of the ones in the modbase cumulative pack (my guess is Martmod, though it could also be my modbase-compatible AoS, which isn't in the pack on the basis that it's not my mod to release) has gnomes, who have muskets.

If you want to mod in weapons, you can easily just type what you want into the raw files...


item_weapon.txt
(to make a weapon a lot like a crossbow that uses different ammo; you can change things like weight and damage easily)
[ITEM_WEAPON:ITEM_WEAPON_GUN]
[NAME:gun:guns]
[DAMAGE:70:BLUDGEON]
[WEIGHT:40]
[SKILL:HAMMER]
[RANGED:GUN:BULLET]
[TWO_HANDED:0]

[MATERIAL_SIZE:3]



Item_ammo.txt
(this will make something a lot like a crossbow bolt, but only guns can use it, and it does a lot more damage)

Yeah, any long range weapon is realy a cross-bow or a bow, with a different name.
You can change the name, give the weapon a slashing ability (if you like a bayonett on your rifle), make it heavier or take more materials to make...

So if I add that into the game how would I go by making it? Same way as a crossbow?

you can put in random skills for new weapons? is it possible to make entity names for it? like "rifleman/rifledwarf" and such?

You have to replace one of the old skills with the new skill name.

Instead of, say, bowmen, you'd have gunmen. In reality, they're the same thing but with prettier names. Gameplay isn't really affected unless you do damage:100000:blunt.
