Draining an ocean.
« on: November 09, 2008, 05:39:09 am »

I was thinking of doing it like this. It needs magma.

Ok, so 1 level above the ocean, I have a sort of hollow square which goes from the edge of the coast, out to the ocean, which basically is 5 tiles wide, with the 3 central tiles being covered with a bridge. I then pour magma into this. I then pull the lever, causing the bridges to release the magma which will hopefully form obsidian on the surface of the ocean and then collapse to the bottom. I then repeat, building up a wall of obsidian, sealing off the square from the rest of the ocean. I then pump the water out and can commence construction of my base. Any flaws in this plan?

If you abandon and reclaim, the ocean will be full again, and I don't think you can grow aboveground plants on ex-ocean tiles. If you plan to do neither, I'd say it will work.

Your avatar frightens me.

But your idea should work.  It might take a while though, depending on how well your computer handles this sort of thing.

I don't quite understand what you're doing. Are you building a 3x3 obsidian column that you intend to build a staircase through to make a base under the ocean? If so, I see no need for pumping. Also, you'll need to make the column 3x4 to have room to build hatches, so dwarfs don't die if they fall.

DanielLC: No, he's going to build underwater obsidian walls all around the map, isolating a part of the ocean from the rest. Then he's going to pump it dry. A massive project, but I guess that's sort of the point.

I see.

Remember, magma takes forever to flow. I suggest using pumps to speed it up.
