This is Bug 1021, and I plan to have it fixed for next time.

Magma-flooding your entire fortress is an easy and effective way to kill off all your cats.

Magma-flooding your entire fortress is an easy and effective way to kill off all your cats.

I have tested this and it has turned out to be completely successful. All negative side effects are negligible.

It also solves pathing issues.

why would you want to kill of your cats?

well....this stupid bug was getting annoying...i thought my cats were getting injured during their "hunt"....turns out that it was just some stupid bug......well....thats good to klnow....i was just ignoring the message....but this is good news that it is fixable.....now im off to fix it in my game.....

I thought I'd be clever and fix it by giving mouths the grip tag, but then my dwarves started shooting crossbow bolts out of the crossbows they were holding in their mouths.  I left it on because it seemed to scare the goblins pretty good.

I know this is a necropost, but wouldn't it make more sense for the solution to be to call the new mouth type "MOUTH_GRASP", as it seems that more than just the cat could use it; dogs for instance can carry things in their mouths, as can many other creatures without grasping limbs/opposable thumbs.

Hi!

By now, the bug fix has been used in its current form by several people (including yours truly). The bug fix itself already breaks seed and save compatibility, so if you change it yet again now, you get another break, making it difficult for people to sort out which version they need to profit from seeds/pregenned worlds others have provided.

As it stands now, cats are the only animals carrying stuff about regularly in the game, so as far as the current version of the game is concerned, implementing that ability for dogs or other animals is rather pointless.

Finally, it is a quickfix for a basic bug in the game and, as far as I know, not the final remedy when the bug is properly fixed in a new release by Toady One. So, the emphasis should be on working rather than being biologically sound.

That's interruption spam.
You'll get that from anything that does anything and sees anything that's not friendly.
That's not something that can truly be solved without a rewrite of the announcements, which has already happened for the most part for next release anyway from what I understand of the dev_now.

Fixing it the 'correct' way would break save compatibility.  So, no, it won't be fixed until the next major release, I believe.
