Cave Exploring?
« on: November 07, 2008, 09:17:32 pm »

How hard is it to find caves without doing quests? Lately I have read the "Ted the Caver" horror story and it makes me want to go caving, problem is I don't want to spend the money on the equipment and find experienced people. Heck, even people just to go along with me. So I look through my list of games and decide, maybe Dwarf Fortress. It has caves, it a Z-Level system, and it has weird mysterious creatures lurking in the dark. I have explored caves from quests before in DF and had tons of fun just walking around the winding paths, imagining what it looks likes.

Once again, how hard is it to find caves without doing quests? I mean just wandering around and stumbling upon them. I would look for myself but I won't be on a computer capable of running DF smoothly for several hours.

Thanks ahead of time.

There's a checkbox in world gen to reveal caves on the world map.

Wow, I didn't realize you were talking about real caves there at first. ;D
Hit that checkbox and they'll just show up on the world map like any town would.

The less obvious thing: It's a Yes/No parameter, not a checkbox.

Potato Tomato.  It's still a Boolean operation.

Caves are much larger in some of the older versions, FYI. Same population, though, so I'm not sure I'd recommend them.

FYI, cave exploring is called spelunking.

Which is a much more interesting word.  ;)

If you want bigger caves, at worldgen set the minimum and maximum sizes to 400 and 500, respectively.

But they're still inhabited by the same number of creatures last I checked, so that'd be pretty darn boring.

Last time i checked theres way more critters in bigger caves. The problem is when they all wind up on the surface for one reason or another.

Now i have to go gen a world with max sized caves and go spelunking.  :D

Be sure to add a couple hundred extra caves as well.  I think large worlds get more mega beasts as well.

You must be doin' something wrong, because in my gigantic caves there are usually creatures all the way down.

I've had empty large caves, medium caves with scattered rats, and tiny caves with 6 legendary creatures and paved with trolls.

I don't think creatures are determined by cave size.

Was it good? I started reading it a while ago and forgot about it. I might pick it up again.
