Just to answer a question concerning laptops - the numpad is not necessary for most things. I play without it, as most functions of the game can be accessed by shortcut keys and not the 'z'-menu. The only thing you can't do without a numpad is pick things up - and on laptops that's solved by pressing the Fn key and the key designated as Numpad 0 on your keyboard (I think that's M on the slim models).

Isn't the 'g' key the pick stuff up button?

@lordbucket, more for convenience then anything else.  Could do more 'evil' for much longer.. and its not hard to spring back.

Sounds like way to much work. Nukes are for de-infestating a city when a truckload of poisons didn't work

Or when a few well-placed molotovs are too "hazardous" (pshh. Caution is for pussies)

I just started playing the game. Thanks to my noobiness, I was killed by putits in my house. Twice.  :P

I repeatedly shot them with arrow, as instructed by Lumias, to no effect. Melee did the job in 1-2 hits. Will bow+arrow setup stay that weak at higher levels?? I really wanna play a gun-slinging character.  :(

Ranged gets much better. Enough better that it's viable on it's own without melee, though I'd actually recommend you do both. If you want to be a gunslinger, pick up the marksman skill, as well as firearms if you don't already have it. You might also take up Eye of Mind while you're at it, as I think (but am not positive) that the crit bonus it gives you applies to ranged attacks too. Also, be aware that ranged damage is weighted by distance to target, with the exact weighting varying by weapon type. You were probably having trouble with the putits because bows get huge penalties attacking monsters when they're directly next to you. Most firearms don't have that problem.

It will also help, of course, to upgrade your gear.

For general purposes, the laser gun class of weapon is pretty much the best, aside from thrown items like grenades, which are insane, and shurikan, also insane. The laser gun does full damage out to almost max range, and half on the last square.

Okay, thanks for the tips, guys. Which race makes the best gunslinger? I somehow always choose Yerles (the one with one extra skill point per level up), probably due to its versatility.

EDIT: And just realised it got Firearms as a starting skill. Neat.

I'm going to play a throwaway character to get myself familiar with the game first. I'm still struggling memorizing basic control.  :-\

Probably either Yerles or Juere, but since Yerles start with Firearms skill, I'd go with them.

I did the same, but be aware that death prior to level 6 is mostly irrelevant. You'll lose some gold, but that's it. Death once you've made level 6 has a chance to result in permanent attribute loss. In general any character will grow more powerful with time though, and it doesn't take a long time to get sufficiently "more powerful" that starting a new character doesn't really benefit you. So...one of your first goals should be learning the game well enough that you can avoid dying all the time. If you're still dying every ten minutes after reaching level 6, or if you end up hopelessly cursed and diseased before you've figured out how to deal with those things, then making it a throwaway character at that point might make sense. But if by the time you reach level 6 you're not dying very often, you may as well continue playing with that character.

To phrase it differently: up to level 6 is your throwaway character. You might not need to actually start a new character after learning the game.

I guess Yerles is the best option, Also;
Quoted from elona wiki "Yerles' racial feat grants one additional skill point per level. While in the beginning this may not seem like much, in the future raising a skill's potential can cost as much as 30 platinum coins! Eventually, this will be like receiving 30+ platinum coins per level up. Its also advised to save your skill points until your skills cost at least 20 platinum to raise."

save your skill points until your skills cost at least 20 platinum to raise

I have mixed feelings on that. I followed that advice, and I'm now level 19 with 80 skill points sitting in reserve. My highest skill is evasion at 27, and most of my other skills that I use are in the 15-20 range, and it costs anywhere from 4-7 or so platinum to raise a skill potential.

The problem is that by saving skillpoints like that I've had to do literally hundreds of quests to get enough platinum to keep my skill potentials up at a reasonable level. (50-70% mostly) I'm sure I'll benefit later on, like the advice goes, once it costs 20+ platinum to raise a potential...but I kind of had to suffer a lot along the way.

If you're willing to do hundreds of quests, yes, saving your skillpoints for later on will ultimately give you a more powerful character. But if you're not, it's not like the game is so difficult that it's absolutely neccessary to go to the trouble. So I'm not saying don't do it...but don't feel like you have to.

I think it will also make a big difference what sort of charcter you want to play. Personally, I chose a warmage, so I'm investing in both melee and magic skills, plus I use a lot of ranged combat, and I've also taken up gardening, pickpocketing and performing. So altogether I have about 20 skills that I'm using. 6 skillpoints per level might not have been enough for me. But if you're playing a straight mage or only a sgunslinger or whatever, 6 skillpoints per level might be enough that you wouldn't really ever need to do quests for platinum even if you started spending skillpoints right away at level 2. But on the other hand...with 20 some skills, even havign used a couple wishes, I'm now at 36 platinum to buy a new skill, so that's 15+18+21+24+27+30+33+36=204 platinum just on buying new skills. If you want that many skills and you're planning on hoarding skillpoints too...that's hundreds of hundreds of platinum you're going to need. If you were to only use platinum to buy new skills and spend skillpoints to keep their potentials up, even then that's still a couple hundred quests. Hoarding skillspoints, maybe four or five hundred. Some players might be unwilling to do that.

So overall yes...hoarding skillpoints may give you a more powerful character come end-game, but it may come with some costs too.

Cool, Yerles it is!

I'm actually playing a Yerles Warrior. A fairly straightforward melee character. I'll keep the character if by level 6 I feel I've mastered the game.

Anyway, about Rail Gun, since it's made of ether, by wielding it, I would gradually develop ether diseases, wouldn't I? And I need to use Cloak of Vindale to slow down the effects and to actually cure the diseases, I need Potion of Cure Corruption or something along those lines, but is this potion hard to get?

If only we had more classes just like the ones in Elona Shooter, there would be more varieties in the game.

Anything made of Vindale will save you throughout the game. And honestly, there needs to be a custom class option.

Is vindale actually that useful? If you are caught by etherwind in the wilderness, you only suffer about 10 turns of it if you immediately read a scroll of return. Even if you get disease, it's not like cure corruption is super hard to find or disease is particularly crippling.

Buri, if you want the gunslinger, you're going to want Yerles Archer/Pianist. Archer starts with the marksman skill which boosts your ranged attack, and the pianist gives you charisma to create a wall of melee pets. Plus, both classes start with riding, which gives you free speed later in the game.
