Consider it this way: your Life stat is your HP modifier; while your "base" HP is dependant on your constitution and level.

Let's say you have 500 HP with a life stat of 100.

If you equipped some equipment that raised your life stat to 150, you would have 750 HP.
If you're playing as a metal (bell debug race) which has a life stat of 1, you'll have 5 HP.

As far as I know, there is no way to maximize HP gain from leveling, all races gain the same amount of "base" hp per level. Even if you piled on the Life/Mana boosting equipment before leveling, you'd just lose the benefits once you take them off.

...nobody seems to know for sure. The wiki states that hp bonuses are not applied retroactively. People on the forums insist that the wiki is wrong, and that everything is applied retroactively.

I've never actually tested it in wizard, but my impression is that in previous versions it was not retroactive, but it is now. I'm unsure about the life modifier, but in particular I can affirm that constitution is not something you need to worrya botu retroactive application, because hitpoints are not gained as any kind of multiplier of contitution per level. That's not how it works. If you gain a level, you'll gain hit points. If you gain constitution, you'll gain hit points. But having more constitution does not give you more hit points when you level, and having more levels does not give you more hit points when you gain constitution. The hp gains they each give are not correlated.

...now that I think about it though, I know that when I've gained additional levels of the Ascetic feat, I've immediately gained hit points. That suggests that the life bonus is applied retroactively too.

In any case, I don't think you need to "rush" to get things done before you level, as the wiki repeatedly encourages you to do. Leveling is not a bad thing. Don't be scared of it. Though on the other hand, it's not the huge panacea of power that it is in most other games. When I first started playign I spent a few hours just running around killing things to gain levels and I found that I wasn't really any stronger or sturdier than I was at level 1. You need to pay attention to attributes too. For example, I highly recommend visiting Yowyn from time to time and doing harvest quests. There's no chance that you'll be able to complete one for a while, but simply picking what vegetables you can and failing the quests is one of the best early game sources of strength and constitution gains. That will help you out early on just as much as leveling will. If possible, try to also get the gardening skill early on, as that increases from picking vegetables too, which will even further increase your rate of attribute gains.

Leveling is pretty bad actually. It and fame are the two main determiners of how hard the enemies are, and neither of them increases your ability to fight, at least in any significant degree. Leveling does give you bonus points you can assign to your skills to increase them and some more health and mana, but that's pretty much it. Plus at level 6 you get out of newbie mode and have to pay taxes and start losing skills when you die.

You can reconfigure the config.txt file so that the game operates on yuighjbnm or whatever. Just make sure you don't have duplicate keys. And don't forget to leave a space after the keys, I'm not sure what it does, but it is bound to be important.

Fame yes...leveling, I don't think so. I know that everyone says that leveling makes monsters tougher, but from actually playing I just don't see it. Keep your fame low by failing quests and leveling isn't going to hurt you. Even at levels in the low teens I was still getting putits and hermit crabs and things during map ambushes. It wasn't until I started letting my fame go up that monsters started to get more dangerous. Just be sure to do lots of harvest quests to keep your fame down, and leveling isn't a problem.

I can do that as well, but I would rather avoid the hassle of toggling NumPad on/off, so is there an option to reconfigure the keys? I would like to keep NumPad on when I play the game and any keys used for it would be substituted with other unused keys. Is that possible?
Well, to be fair, almost all the menus in the game can be accessed by Z, X, or C. You won't be switching from numpad on/off as much as you think.

But if you absolutely do not want to do that ever, I think there's a way to reconfigure keys in game, by pressing Escape then C.

Oh... I never really looked at the numbers behind it, but I remember that I noticed occasionally that my HP would increase between levels.  Sorry if I whatever I gave you was misleading.  :x

@Bucket, map ambushes are based on your distance from cities, and whether or not you're on a road, IIRC.  Walking between Vernis, Palmia, and generally staying in the "civilized" areas pretty much always get me putit level attacks, while walking to Noyel or wandering around the plains north of Palmia (trying to get to the temple, for example) will get me high level stuff - Grizzly or Orc kinda stuff.

Also, I use Z, X, and C pretty exclusively for getting to my menus, and I just switch to whichever I need with 7 and 9.

I'm not familiar with the other roguelike direction setting (yuihjkbnm?  Something), but IIRC "I"'s command isn't accessible through other means, so you might have to change it.

Level affects monsters summoned & what random dungeons are available, so if you want harder dungeons you could level up.
Fame affects the difficulty of the quests and the highwaymen ambushes.
By gaining constitution you gain hp but level increases your hp the most.

So no, level isn't going to hurt but it is still better to stay low. Especially if you're like me and do a bit of everything and have a higher level than your combat capacity.

not much after lvl 6, but try blowing up palmia before that if you plan on getting treasure of the wicked. that way you just have to die a few times to get your karma back.

Interestingly, Armok's name actually originates from arm_ok, a variable in one of Toady's earlier games that kept track of how many of your arms weren't missing.

The only condition are a clear/light inventory and being able to carry about 60-65 stones in weight... 

Well, you also need to know when to stop to rest up.  Easy enough.

I can't say i've bothered observing the hp regen vs. overweight damage, But unless you stop and use heals wouldn't 60 over the limit kill you?
It weighs 120 afterall.

It won't instantly kill you.  As I said, you need to know when to stop and rest.

If you only carried the nuke at 120 stones...  you need to be able to at the very least carry 60 stones to carry the nuke...  Under this condition though, you take the most overweight damage by frequency, but, it is still doable if you take the time.

As for stopping and resting?  You drop the nuke under you and then rest till full health.
If you are in an overland map, you go into the wilderness, drop it then rest.

At lvl 1-6, you'll probably never out regen the overweight damage.

Has anyone really found it worthwhile to go to all that trouble? The artifact is only useful to people planning on being very criminal, and even then...personally I just don't think it's that useful. You need to do so many quests for platinum anyway that there's no shortage of positive karma.

I wouldn't want to deliberately cripple the entire early game experience to get it "easily" when you can always just save a few lost wallets and get it later.

Either way...it's totally not something I would encourage a first time player to feel he needs to do.
