I think you mean north of Palmia.  I've been hooked on this game lately.  I've been making some slow, but steady progress.  You guys are making FFII sound interesting, though. I'll have to try it sometime.

You pick things up with "g".  If you're hitting comma like you would in most other roguelikes, well, there's your problem. ;D

After coma, semi colon, period, and single quote failed me I navigated all the ZXC menus looking then quit. I figured if I was too stupid to figure out how to pick up a fricking object from the ground, I didn't deserve to play.  :-[
Sure, g for pick an item up from the ground makes a lot of sense....  ???

For some reason people, particularly in vernis seem to teleport alot. Is this normal? I believe there must be some invisible guy running around or something and teleporting people.

Yes, well, nobody accused the NPCs in this game of being intelligent. ;)  If you have Pickpocket and Sense Quality (just Pickpocket might do), you can check any NPC's inventory risk-free.  At least, as long as you don't try to steal anything.  If you want to stop them from teleporting, you can either get REALLY good at pickpocketing, or you can hope for an "I want it!" quest to show up with them as the mark -- you're able to trade with the mark while the quest is active.

Nothing better than trying to get to the shelter during an etherstorm while the Inn Keeper is nusy teleporting around the city.  :P

Interestingly, Armok's name actually originates from arm_ok, a variable in one of Toady's earlier games that kept track of how many of your arms weren't missing.
