Actually, I looked into the gamepad thing myself and I think it should be feasible. There's one key, z, I think, that opens a "quick menu" of sorts. It can allow you to access things that would normally require keystrokes, by inputting a direction. Sort of like a radial menu I suppose.

I just can't recall how to bind keys, if you can. You can use Xpadder, if you're on windows: http://www.xpadder.com/   -- It's probably the best keyboard-to-gamepad tool I've used yet. Even has profiles, and a configurable visual representation of your keys in relation to each other on the controller. Slightly confusing at first to use, but we play Dwarf Fortress. We like confusing!

I've been meaning to use my own pad, but my PS2-to-USB converter is on the fritz.

I'm playing on a numpad-challenged laptop using the z-key menu. Works ok for me.

Just stumbled upon this thread.. so sorry if this is mentioned already..

How feasible is it to play this game primarily via a gamepad? Anybody already doing so that has a good setup? I have a Logitech ps2-controller lookin gamepad

Nevermind! There is actually a game pad section when you hit Shift-S and choose game settings.

Haha, jesus. I put on some cursed armor earlier because it was way better than what I was wearing, and now I teleport all over the place. Speaking of which, it doesn't -say- it randomly teleports... but it does.

Anyway, I was running around in that tunnel under Vernis, grabbing some of the furniture and stuff, and I suddenly teleported into the room with all the slimes, putits, and another creepy fucker who looked like he could kick my ass. I was like, "I'm boned", and I opened my inventory praying I had the teleport scroll I remember grabbing earlier. I did, and it teleported me right back to the entrance. How is that for luck?

Whoa.  Curses are baaad news.  They're not like Nethack, where oh, it's cursed, you can't take it off and maybe it works worse.  ALL cursed stuff has SEVERAL bad effects, and teleportation is one of them.  Curses are hard to remove (uncurse doesn't always work)...and they can spread.

Stockpile uncurse scrolls, buy them when you see them until you have 5+ or so if you are the kind of person who likes experimenting.  Curses are bad news.

That's funny. We posted about a similar topic within minutes of eachother.

I'm finding that out too. Teleportation seems to be standard with cursed items, and I've spent 2k just trying to get this one curse to go away.

My Golem has a large stockpile of Uncurse somewhere. I am going to get him Ride next so he can ride horses and not be a REALLY REALLY huge slowpoke.

THANKFULLY his Anemia has downgraded by 1 so he can heal in battle again!

Just plain don't equip cursed or doomed objects... It isn't worth it.

Also... Keep ALL named equipment no matter what! They may be some of the worst equipment ever! (And goodness they are) but they also are traded for rediculously named objects.

My Best armor EVER was traded for a trident that had -4 (-4) or something like that. The Armor provides me with +2 (12, 42) or something like that (probably less Id have to check)

That's nuts, though I did notice the game seems to base value not so much on the stats or resistances of an item as its material and whether or not it is named, etc.

My male dwarf just had sex with a drunk dude in the vernis shelter and we both went insane. 50 gp... it was so worth it.

Apparently the key to having sex with people is getting them drunk. Once a character is drunk you get the "interested in a lil' tail tonight?" option, regardless of sex.

Or species.

I have some disturbing screenshots from when I encountered a drunken wolf at the spot with all the altars...

Gives a new meaning to "tail"...

"Apparently the key to having sex with people is getting them drunk. Once a character is drunk you get the "interested in a lil' tail tonight?" option, regardless of sex"

Well I researched this.

Yes you can have sex with drunk people (and some people will allow you no matter what in my experience) but this is actually prostitution.

If you want Sex and get children you need a Wife which you need to get someone to like you. Generally speaking that means you need to Love Potion them (-10 Karma hit) which requires you to spike a specific kind of food with it (I tried with healthy leaf... didn't work).

After they are yours forever you can have children creating sex with them if your sleepy.

You can have children with ANYONE! as long as you can marry them.

Actually based on the backstory, standard sexual reproduction doesn't work any more due to the ether wind.  Check out the ranch guide.  Reproduction is now some bizarre asexual thing that can be done all alone, and "having kids" is actually creating a combined gene which can be used in the creation of a new character...it's just plain not anything like normal reproduction.

Neither does digging.

With exception to water, doors, and creatures you can dig through EVERYTHING!

Staple with horse? Dig! Boat? Dig!

Haha. I wonder if you can get gems and gold from the side of a boat...

I realized this too after I finished a hunting mission. There was this block of tree-tiled matter, which wasn't a normal tree, and I was like "I bet I can dig into this". Sho' 'nuff.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Finally got the image to post properly. Spoiler is a pic of mah' home.

yep! Though towns and cities give you standard amount of gold (Though they can give you all the ores. which is probably based off of mining)

Dungeons give you it based off of how deep you go. So far I seen that level 5 or lower gets you 100. So Digging isn't a good source of income.

Even without any mining skills I generally get about 100 gold on the first floor of lvl 4 dungeons. You know the annoying ones where you have to dig to get to the stairs.

Interestingly, Armok's name actually originates from arm_ok, a variable in one of Toady's earlier games that kept track of how many of your arms weren't missing.
