If you're having trouble treading water, here's my advice.  Drop your fame.  Your level does not significantly increase the difficulty of the game.  Fame does by a huge amount.  Your taxes are based on fame, wilderness enemies (but not ambushes) are based on fame, and the quests you're offered are based on fame.  Fame is extremely costly and dangerous.

Making money is all about the delivery quests and escort quests (except for Beauty and Beast quests).  Dungeoneering is perhaps the biggest way to lose money in the game.  And your monthly salary is going to be a pittance in the beginning of the game, so most taxes will be paid as a delivery person.

Running all those jobs will give you plenty of platinum, and it will recover the karma lost from the occasional misdeed.  It will also shoot your fame through the roof, so fail a good number of quests too.  Easy quests to fail without consequences are I Want It! and Birthday quests.  Hunting quests can be failed quickly, but carry a risk to your equipment.  Harvest Time quests have weak enemies to train on, pots which may contain loot, and free food lying around (you can't take it with you though).

On my new characters I always try every "Party time!" quest I see. I do this to farm the beggars. Eventually one will drop the Beggars pendant.

That's...

That's crazily overpowered.

I saw someone SOMEwhere (might have been this thread) talking about not killing beggars until you have some item or ability that lets you actually tell which one is carrying it...  Does anyone have a clue what I'm speaking of?

Yeah, he was talking about the beggars wandering around in the streets. It doesn't matter for the beggars in the parties though, so go out and bag some beggars for me.

EDIT: Also, know that there are two different beggars with two different sprites, and they both have a chance of dropping the pendant.

The Beggar's pendent is a very nice item for you to carry especially for the long hual.

Here is something that would shave off a lot of my annoyance. Is there a good way to wake people up? Whistle perhaps?

Doesn't the game say you can bash people to wake them up, but it annoys them?  Never tried.

The whistle is the only good way to wake people up. Bashing people tends to make them hostile, so they try to kill you.

I thought it was the other way: bashing is safer, but the  whistle can cause hostility.
Anyways, bashing someone to make him wake up incurs a -1 karma penalty.

I usually wait 'til people wake up, unless I'm in a hurry.

I tried bashing someone to wake them up.  It gave me -1 karma, but did not make them hostile or even hurt my relation to them.

I've got a new character...dwarf, uh, fighter or warrior or whatever they call the main str+con class.  I've discovered that playing this game safely, IE just missions, reducing fame frequently, and avoiding combat when possible, really takes a fun game and makes it boring as feck!  Also from running around I'm level 5 already.

At least I'm pretty rich.  Had about 60k gold when I found my first kitty bank, and by now I'm probably 2/3 of the way to a museum.  Though I don't know if that's something I even want right now.  In fact I'm kind of aiming for some better allies...Hmm...

The first and only time I tried bashing someone awake, they murdered me, but i have used the whistle hundreds of times with only one incident.

I think that both bashing and whistling have a chance of making them hostile, but it is much more likely to happen if you bash them.

Any recommendations for good builds?

From what I read in the Wiki, if you use the Whistle while they cannot see you. They will not attack

I'll point out that the fame you lose from failed missions seems proportionate to your current fame, at least in part.  So don't bother keeping it at zero.  If your fame is around 100-200 * your level, you are probably doing just fine.

My wizard got incredibly lucky and found this a couple of days back. Apparently it's a neweish fixed artifact that's only included in the few latest versions. I have no idea what the last property does, though, this is the first time I've seen an item that "Catches signals from God".
