Gawd I'm the crappiest wizard ever, I've got 20 useless spells and only one offensive spells that blows me and my companion up when I cast it. Anyone have any tips, I tried farming the puppy cave for magic books but that's how I got the 20 useless spells.

Interestingly, Armok's name actually originates from arm_ok, a variable in one of Toady's earlier games that kept track of how many of your arms weren't missing.

1.) Puppy Cave diving DOES work, it just takes some time and luck

2.) Sleeping has a pretty good chance of giving you knowledge of a spell, My thief has a crap-ton of spells and he's never read a spellbook

3.) Get lots of speed, you'll need it.

4.) Don't be a wizard for your first character

Instead of a bunch och spacemarines you'd better get some sisters of battle.
They're more interessting when off-duty.

Actually, most of them are either rewards from clearing dungeons or from buried treasure.

Stealing from/killing adventurers is a baaaaaaad idea, because it makes that adventurer permanently hostile to you, no matter how many times they die and respawn.

A good half of adventurers hated the hell out of Brill. I still owned them every time though, I'm pretty sure having a nice little battle waiting for you in most battles (And some Dungeons) is worth more than friendship from an expensive mercenary which is useless 99% of the time.

Well, this is new.

After a particularly successful raid of the Puppy Cave, I was sorting through the spoils when I noticed that I had an "old spellbook" I could read, but wasn't normally listed in my inventory.

I read the book and:

This girl named Obedelia fell from the sky.

Stuff can't really be sent on fire, AFAIK, you can just burn it for a turn.
Yeah, certain spells can start fires

You CAN cook food by setting it on the ground and spewing fire at it, i've discovered.

I also figured out how the ammo system works, theres an option in the z-menu that switches between:

Normal shot: Unlimited amount
Piecing Shot: Limited
Explosive Shot: Limited
Rapid Shot: Limited

The amount and availability of the three limited shot varies by ammo

For example:

Can hold 15 piercing shots, 6 explosive shots, and 33 rapid shots.

When those are depleted, you can have them refilled at a weaponshop.

Sidenote: Shelters are worthless, they take 10 turns to set up, and another 5 to enter IIRC, in that time you could already be inflicted.

Your best alternative is to always carry some scrolls of return, when Etherwind hits, just switch to the local map and read it.

Note that this will cause a karma penalty if you have any quests going at the time.

Wall of fire works well. I also occasionally have to deal with the raging infernos Rem's scythe of fire cause.....

The trick with shelters is to set them up along paths you often walk, so that if the wind blows and you're nearby you can duck inside. I'm planning to set one up on my Yowin-Derphy trail soon as that's where I get caught in it the most.

I should do the whole trail of shelters too at some point...

Right giving my companion a little trial by fire. And by fire I mean hundreds of monsters. And by trial I mean nearly getting killed again and again.

THAT SHOULD BE FUN.

I sort of intended to stock up on healing implements.

The idea was to let her bulldoze Puppy Cave or somewhere where lower leveled Adventurers could get their feet wet, while I stuck close and kept anything from surrounding her.

I'll let you know how that goes.
