So "Life" is more than just the percentage of HP you gain upon levelling... so much for the wiki  ;D

edit... its still worth backing up a savegame prior to gaining a level and trying it with and without ruby items.

Okay, I don't know what's going on. Suddenly and inexplicably, the game just decided to ignore half my negotiation skill. I went from getting like a 50% discount on items to getting a 20% discount. And I don't know why. Recently, all I've done has been getting a museum and joining the thieves' guild.

I just checked, and all the Derphy shops give me the same discount as before. Damn thieves' guild has ruined my reputation.

I never keep track of shop prices... but I do know reputation has an effect on services. Also Fighter's Guild gives you a big discount on item ID. That's a big enough reason for me to stay in it... after getting/stealing what I need from the other guilds of course.

Oh, it gives you a discount on all item identification? That makes sense. I just realized that all the shops are giving me the same prices. It's just that the identification guys are charging more than 98 gold per ID.

Yes. I read somewhere that's supposed to be the ID guy in the Fighter's guild only, but in all versions the discount applies for all ID service.

Wait so that means that I can't be in all three guilds at once. That's annoying.

With a few tools you can use the other guilds as well.

You'll need:
1. Scrolls of Incognito (it disguises you)
2. Wand of teleport

Use wand of teleport to move the guard away from the staircase, then read a scroll of incognito. Then go inside and conduct your business. Be quick though, once the incognito wears off, alarm will sound and the tough guys inside will attack.

I had a slightly different experience with getting into one of the guilds, given that i broke into the thieves guild by violence to allow me to go learn pickpocket. (I planned to steal trees. don't ask.)

If you use a disguise kit (Maybe an incognito scroll too, i don't know.) after going down the stairs into the guild, once it wears off the alarm doesn't sound again unless you do something stupid, like hitting someone in there.

I won't ask, but I'll guess... you tried to put all the fruitbearing trees into the same spot so you can easily harvest for seeds?

It's actually an easy way to train pickpocket. Enter a map in the wilderness and steal all the trees... you get skill improvements just the same and no one will catch you.

but in that case it would mean he trained pickpocketing for the sole purpose of levelling it. i think the trees he wanted to steal were the goal and not the road.

I wasn't aiming for fruit bearing trees, as i'm not a farmer/with the right god anyway, I was aiming for stealing trees to raise my pickpocketing as it starts at 1 when you buy the skill, that means it's hard to steal anything without getting caught.

Trees are big, heavy and unwatched, and thus work out as free training in the area. I planned to train up to the point i could steal the kings bed without being caught, just because i could. Of course, i found out i'm not strong enough to steal trees after this, so i've taken my pianist to derphy to steal hearts.

I keep getting caught doing that, too, though.

Also, i really wanted trees in my home.

Can't you just close the door so that no one sees you, then steal the bed?

Fruit trees are great even if you don't bother with the seeds since every couple of days you get some free food. A dozen fruit trees in your home or storage area can be a very easy source of food and easy cooking leveling. You can even sell the cooked food for a slow but steady source of income.

Oh and Touch of Sleep is almost essential to successful stealing in towns. That or a very reliable teleport.
