something like that means they're cursed, normal ones do show up on the read menu on the world map... or maybe the (t) use menu.. try that

Do you need to identify them first? i have 1 which was identified as part of an "identify everything" purchase but the other is un-id'd.  The identified one is NOT cursed.

Also, how do you forage for food? i tried on the world map and on a local outdoor map and never found anything.

Are you sure they read "Treasure Map" and not "Mysterious Map"? The mysterious maps are just furniture. Cursed maps disintigrate when you try to read them.

Whenever you enter a wilderness tile, api nuts, edible wild plants, and healthy leaves have a chance to spawn. If you didn't find one, try again. You can also "b"ash fruit trees in Vernis, Palmia, and Yowyn to find fruits.

If you find food on the ground, you can eat it, even if it's not yours: Farmed produce in Yowyn, the rations near the putit mine entrance in Vernis, the apple in one of the rooms in Palmia, the milk in Noyel's Inn, etc; and they respawn as well. Same applies for all throwable, usable, and drinkable items you find in towns.

Oh i see.  The one is a mysterious map and the other is some adjective (Not treasure) map as well.  I just assumed they were all different names for treasure maps.

I've gotten to... lvl 15 I think? I got capped though because I hadn't boosted my attack power enough early on, I think.
Stock up on Api Nuts. They don't go bad as far as I know.
Likewise boost up your performer skill playing for low-level allies (Not guards or in missions) - and not your companion either. It took me a while but I was able to occasionally pull in prizes from performer missions ... and I started my game as a farmer.
The materials can be used with certain items (I think... material kits or scrolls?) to turn an item into that material type. (So rubynus ore + kit + item --> rubynus item)

Unless you're talking about something else...

For food, push (use interact menu) trees in towns, eat your cargo food when traveling, and bake/buy bread for dungeons. Bread never rots. Herbs never rot too, but those are better used for raising your pets' attributes.

Don't play in the bar in Vernis. There's a high level jackass that absolutely hates music. In other places, you need high performer skill (like over 20) to be successful. Before that, entertain your pets or your ranch animals.

EDIT: also what are the material I find used for?

Those in the 'm' screen? You can buy/find different tools to craft items. Most are useless, some are really convenient (like ID scrolls).

A leash helps... but you gotta fight your way back out or something and bring the puppy to the kid...  alive.

If it dies, it respawns when you go back to the bottom floor.  You get a portable freezer... can't hold much though....

The freezer is good for holding big daddy corpses for sacrifice. Keeping regular food in there is a bit of a waste though.

The freezer is also good for "I want" quests that involve food. Often the food will rot on your way back, and the quest giver will die eating it. Quite often the quest giver doesn't have anything worth looting, so you'd want to keep the food fresh to avoid losing karma.

"o"pen the freezer, then press "7","9", or Tab to switch to the "put" menu.

 :o

FYI, a few tips:

In order to do the party time! quests you need over 30 perf or you'll get killed.

Also, a great way of making money is to do escort/ecologist/before it's too late! quests, though the latter tends to be extremely hard unless you move diagonally on the world map (helps you get to places faster)

(Stating the obvious, and finally - There's an irc channel on rizon.net, it's #elona, and http://elona.wikia.com/wiki/Elona_Wiki)
