Anyway to mitigate the feast or famine aspect of this game?

I've only made it to level 6, but on every character I played I run into the same stuff.

Enemies 1 shot me or cause no damage

There are 30 corpses around or 0

I have 4000 gold or 0

The shops have 10 stethiscopes/leashes/sleeping bags or 0

Also, any advice on what to catch with your first monster ball? I got one of those orange/yellow horse one time and it was pretty good.

What equipment do you guys choose to identify... seems like an insane money sink. Any good archer/wizard builds or walk throughs?

My solution to this is "Stop dungeoneering, and quest!"  Once you have oh 10k gold or so, suddenly identifying everything at once is actually do-able.  And then after some time in the puppy cave, you can start selling off potions and scrolls etc.

Keep your burden down, and don't bother picking up stuff like breastplates etc.  You'll probably buy better stuff from stores eventually.

As a rule I don't pick up any pieces of armor from a dungeon floor unless it is dropped by a boss. I get most of my good equipment from treasure and shops.

Interestingly, Armok's name actually originates from arm_ok, a variable in one of Toady's earlier games that kept track of how many of your arms weren't missing.

I need tips on how to deal with Ranged attackers without needing to be a Wizard (Which if it wasn't for their horrible attribute penelty it would always be the way to go)

Do I always need to make sure I have a ranged attack no matter what?

Also I can't seem to throw my rocks at enemies, are they somehow ammo for other weapons?

If you equip a rock as ammo, and no ranged weapon, that should let you use the 'fire' command I think.

And yeah you should always have a ranged weapon.  I advise learning Firearms and then shooting things.

Fighters (and other classes, I think) start out with Throwing. Throwing isn't bad at all. Shurikens inflict Bleeding, which is very powerful, and of course... frag grenades are self explanatory. And INFINITE.

Random encounters are based on your level right? (not Fame)

I am having trouble keeping up with their raise in difficulty. The game doesn't seem to be very forgiving when it comes to difficulty leaps in the early levels. (Tournaments are FREEKY! Group battles get hard FAST but solos could be done in your sleep for a very long time)

You can go from being capable of plowing through infinate number of enemies to being beaten up by every enemy and their grandmothers. The Scale seems a bit broken, I went from Kobolds to Mutants. Now I have to abandon a character because I can't pay my taxes because the ordinary enemies in the woods can kill me. Heck one mission went from destroying the easiest enemy in the game and their slightly more effective but equally as pathetic cousin to "Lets just melt your face off".

Which suggests to me that they actually want you to abuse the system a bit (Just like a true Roguelike). Evil Trial and Error Gameplay.

To Neonivek, never ever level up quickly that's the easiest way to lose at this game.

Keep doing quest but not any which require you to kill anything untill you have atleast a decent amount of spells or equipments in stock. Right now I have a level two fairy pianist who has been alive for nine in game days and so far to report the best equipment item I have is seven league boots. Worry not as paitence wears off, especially considering that you can level up very slowly but still train your performance skill by playing the piano.

Also at early levels hoard as much api nuts and healthy leafs as possible because at that early level they are much more eaiser to obtain than in later levels, MUCH MORE EASIER TO OBTAIN!

Also I hate jesters, damn bastards always run away.

Turns out those Evil Jesters have an even faster even more evil cousin who doesn't lack in the damage compartment.

Alright so from what your telling me I am suspecting that I need to procrastinate and build up a bank, skill, and equipment roll before bothering to level up.

The largest issue overall is food. Api nuts and Healthy leaves (You forgot the leaves... they also don't rot.) force me to fight the wilderness and thus could level me up.

Random encounters are based on your fame. You also get taxed 2 gold coins for every point of fame you have. If random encounters are getting to hard then you should start purposely failing some quests, but only fail quests that do not incur a karma loss. These are: I want it!, Birthday, Harvest time, Hunting, and Party time!

How is food a problem? Are you buying travelers rations?

I think it's a vastly amusing thought that elephants are so afraid of heights that when Dwarves invented the Z-axis, they couldn't bear to face dwarves in combat anymore.

To solve food problems:

*Buy from bakes (obvious)
*Enter random wilderness areas and start to look for herbs/leaves.
*Find fruit trees in town and bash them.
*Eat corpses that occasionally drop from enemies.

I find it very hard not to level up quickly or accumulate a lot of fame. Every quest I do gives me boatloads of fame, and I own most things in combat with my three companions and all the spells I have.

I got to level eight just by training skills, reading, and shooting things with fire bolts and such. Actually trying to complete the main quest, but I find myself lying down after I die each time. So I have to either restart or go into wizard mode and press F2 to reload to my last save, which then cancels wizard mode.

Either way, I'm enjoying this game as a level 8 kick-ass sorceress who wears green.

I'm more worried about keeping my karma over 29 so guards don't attack me.

On another note, one of my fellow adventurers (slaves) just drew water from a well and gave me a wish! I have no idea what i should waste this wish on, suggestions? I'm a Level 2 Eulderna Wizard in case you need to know.

I am thinking of wishing for a vindale cloak so i do not have to worry about the darn etherwind.

Seven league boots. There's no question on the subject. Etherwind can be avoided by actually checking the date, and sl boots are incredibly useful. Especially with delivery quests to that... snowy place.

Yonel. Seven league boots and speed ring was my second option. Guess i'll go for them instead.

Also, i do know when etherwind occur, it's just that I'm annoyed having to wait around at a town for ages so the etherwind can appear and i can get in the darn shelter.

The best way to be careful about the Etherwind is on those particular months to do jobs that leave you mostly in town. Like birthday and I want it jobs, hunting works too. It also happens only during the first ten days of the month, so after that you can go back to business as usual.
