There's now an English wiki for the game being set up here:  http://elona.wikia.com

Add to it if you can, there isn't much so far.

Also, has anyone joined any of the guilds?  From what I saw on the Japanese wiki, I think you have to skip paying your taxes for four months in a row (which will net you -60 karma) in order to join the thieves guild in Dercy (the guy standing on the stairs is the one you talk to.)  Not as bad as it sounds if you can recover your karma as you go (I have 20 karma already, so I'll just have to gain back 11 or so over those four months as it drops to avoid falling to -30).  But I want to make sure I have it right.

I also suspect etherwind is like Corruption from ADOM -- the Japanese Wiki seems to say that you will continue to get changes even if you stay out of the ether wind, and if you get all 20 stages from the etherwind, you die.  That's why cure corruption potions are so important.

Oh, awesome. Perfect day for it too, I've got nothing to do. I grabbed the MP3 Pack off the Japanese page and used it with the last version; it's very good. Not that I have anything against MIDI, but the default MIDI instruments on an operating system are always terrible.

Ive been playing this for a few days and absolutely love it. It is indeed extremely challenging, just how I like it. My favorite part of the game is the struggle for survival rather than a struggle to be #1 like most games. Ive found myself in multiple situations where I am trapped in a dungeon, usually due to ether storm, and desperately fighting starvation. This aspect coupled with the large world, quest system, and depth makes for a fantastic game.

Aye, that's one aspect I love about it, too. Out of curiosity, what sort of character do you play? I started a new one for the new version, to try a Wizard, and it's quite hard so far. There are many rooms that dish out a ton of weak enemies, draining my stock of magic terribly. Perhaps I should have tried a War Mage.

According to the help files, the world changes constantly, too. I *think* new dungeons appear and disappear, so you never run out of places to go adventuring.

I'm actually playing a wizard also. To deal with weak enemies I usually just face them in close combat with a powerful weapon, and if I find that I am losing ill let loose a spell or two.

Edit: Question: I heard somewhere that you could revive your pet, mine was minced early off and I would love to have my fluffy kitty back again.

The bartender in most cities should offer an option to call your pet back, whether they have died, you've left them somewhere, etc.

If I recall, you can even leave them in City A and call them back in City B, for instance.

I was extremely tempted to solely because of the hilarity factor.

I love this game already. Rolled up a lich wizard named Urist aka Humane Lava and the first thing the game has me do is eat a human beggar which makes me go temporarily insane. This game is great.

Another question: Does anyone know of a way to abandon a quest in a way that prevents you from losing karma and becoming a criminal, because I just took a quest which I now realize is literally impossible. On a straight route at full speed I could not make it half way to my destination without failing.

Edit: I found a console command, freemove, that should allow me to teleport to the town, but I can't seem to work this command properly.

There's a console command to end quests (I forget what it is, but it should be in the built-in manual, which is now translated.) I dunno if you lose Karma when you use it, though.

Remember, you have to drop down to -30 karma to become a criminal...  and you gain 1 karma for every quest you complete.  Take easy escort missions with long time limits to places you already know and you'll do fine.  Avoid the 'escort my girlfriend' one, that involves fighting that can be tricky.  The others should be fine (though the 'sick father' one can have a rather tight time limit.)

If your Karma drops too low, you can also recover it by going to the temple in the far NE of the map and buying an indulgence.  Or you can go to the thieves town in the far SW and do quests there...  there are no guards in that town.

Wizards seem a bit rough to start out as.  Remember, you can give your pets items (talk to them and choose the inventory command, then hit '7' or '9' on your numpad to switch screens if you want to see what they already have and take items back from them -- if you give them armor or weapons, they'll equip it.)  Pets are pretty important for a wizard, so you don't have to waste MP on every little thing.  Gaining a lot of levels will help, too.  Focus on magic dart, it's your cheapest spell...  do easy escort missions to build up the money so you can get more spellbooks, and learn area/line spells for when you're in a pinch.

Also, the darkness arrow / blindness spell helps a huge amount.  Blind opponents will wander randomly and won't be a threat.  If you have a huge corridor filled with nasty monsters chasing you, you can blind the lead monster, and it will bumble around uselessly in the corridor, blocking everyone else.  After magic dart, it's the spell I get the most use out of.

And fire bolt is very nice for making a huge corridor of monsters die.  It lights the floor beneath it on fire, too, so more monsters will die as they try to charge you...  just be careful your pet doesn't wander into it.

I tried that console command also, its called removequest, but it didn't work. However ive moved on now and have been recovering my karma.

As for playing a wizard ive had no troubles at all, likely because I am used to playing wizards in various roguelikes such as nethack. My wizard is almost level 6 now with about 60k gold and he has yet to die. Ive also managed to completely wipe out the town of Nowel (I don't think thats spelled correctly) for fun, but I never saved. I have also never really used my pet, but ive been trying to. The trouble is that my cat always gets minced to easily.

I just found (for sale unfortunately) a crossbow called "The pure crossbow <Pure>" (like in that joke about 100% apple juice being made out of 100% orange juice!)

incidentally, does anyone know what small coins are for?
