Anyone have a good strategy for not dying? The best I've done is a female golem claymore that got up to level four before a goblin got a lucky shot in that took away all 46 oh my health, and gave me the message "The goblin hits you. Your body is liquidated".

Also: How do you farm in this? I used a farmer class and I'm pretty darn sure I had an herb seed, but nowhere could I find any hints how to do it.

I found farming, mining, etc. pretty much impossible when I played. It just didn't 'work' and I always ended up dying somehow.

Is there any way to cheat in this game that doesn't involve the in game console? Cheating from that just makes this evil evil game even harder. I want free moneh :(

The best I've managed is a peaceable enough existance as a prostitute on that golem. Wait for someone to get drunk, make money. Check the job board ocassionally for those rare fetching quests that demand a skeleton or a junk stone or such. Collect my money from my house when it comes in.

Quick beginners guide:

Pets are good. Your starting pet is stronger then you when you start and can be revived on the cheap. Use it.

Run escort quests. Once you learn the times involved, they are excellent money early on.

Don't run the puppy cave until you are strong enough not to die. Dieing in there causes you to lose any equipment that was dropped.

Farming is done on a farm plot. You can buy deeds of farm plot from the store.

Search any resource spots you come across if time isn't a problem. You get lots of free materials which you can make some basic things with.

Get a good ranged weapon. Laser guns are a good bet with full damage to its max range minus 1.

Expect to die. Unlike other rougelikes dieing isn't too big of a deal.

Gene splicing is a good way to level your pets if you have the money. Buy slaves in derphy or horses from the farm town and merge them with your main pet.

To cheat: activate wizard mode and press F5. Input a wish. Profit. Also if you use the gain all special attacks you get a MEWMEWMEW attack that kills everything on the map. Free loot.

I have some additions to beorn080's tips...

Pets: Choose the little girl... but not becaues of loli. Little girl has the largest number of equipment slots among the starting pets, and she can use whatever equipment you don't use yourself. That makes her the best starting pet.

Escort quests: Don't do those "protect me" escort quests, those can be very dangerous. Do those "escort me to doctor" ones. Those sick people can fight. Yup. And there's no assassins going after them.

Puppy Cave: It's actually a good place to go. Go in, stay around the stairs and pickup everything nearby. Then back to town, sell them, rinse and repeat. Puppy cave instantly regenerates when you leave a level, so don't leave items on the ground.

And Elona Wiki is a great resource for how to play Elona.

For cheating, well... I have an AutoHotKey script here... it's a script for save scumming (i.e. save and reload) conveniently. To use, put everything in the following spoiler box into a file with ".ahk" extension. Then download and install AutoHotKey, and instead of running Elona.exe, run the .ahk script instead.

This is what it looks like:

The first time you run it, it will ask you which folder Elona is in. Then it will write an INI file to remember that. It will create a new folder "SaveScum" alongside Elona's save folder.

When you feel you just did something great, exit Elona, select your save in the lower section, and press Backup Selected. Enter a description (or just press Enter for a date). Later if you screw up, select the backup in the upper section, and press Restore Selected.

It takes a while to understand what's difficult to do/fight and what's easy in the game... but once you get that, it'll be very easy, until you hit a high enough level where monsters start spamming status attacks that you have no way to counter.

I know that if you keep on trying you can eventually kind of find a way to get somewhat far ahead before you're hopelessly crushed, but I'm just bored of trying. 10 of my characters ended in a lvl 3 groveling in the dirt at the brink of starvation looking for healthy leaves, a few ended up as total ether mutants, a few went into extremely negative karma they just couldn't raise, a few got to the point where they were highish level but their equipment sucked so all the random monsters owned the crap out of them, etc. etc. etc. etc.
I'm just bored of endlessly trying to improve the one or two strategies that work. I want to fish and play the piano and actually have moneh to spend on stuff.

Perhaps you got yourself too much fame? Elona will scale the foes you face according to your fame.

If you keep doing easy quests to earn money, you will end up having too much fame and random encounters and those not-so-easy quests will hand you your butt.

Deliberately fail some quests. Quests with no time limit (i.e. those that will teleport you to the quest area, like crop gathering and party) will not reduce your karma when you fail.

Go to town and visit the NPC that gives you NPC adventurer list. Compare your level and fame with them. My rule is don't go over 2x the fame than the NPC adventurer one higher rank than me.

Money doesn't make you powerful in Elona... because the items for sale in shops suck. The best items are from NPC adventurers (which you must trade with items with similar vaule) and from monsters you kill.

The items for sale suck at rank 1, but invest a few hundred thousand gold in the shop and they get a lot better. Beautiful, delicious moneh solves everything  >:(

You can also stock up on deeds and oracle scrolls to trade to NPC adventurers. If your really gutsy, hire as many of the highest level adventurers as you can and urge them into battle against the bosses of the chaos forts while you run in and steal the chests. If your lucky, they will kill the boss and you can get some incredible loot.

Maybe at low levels. I have many shops at rank 100 and I don't see anything that can impress me.

Upgrade the black markets and magic shops and that ring guy in noyel. Blacksmiths don't get significantly better as ranks go up as with general and good stores. However at high ranks you can get high level monster balls. Also going to the dwarf shop with unlimited small medals can net you rods of dominance which can get you a massive army with decent use magic device skill.

I already know that... all my rank 100 shops are magic shops.

If you really just wan't to play  without worrying abouut monsters, use F12, type in wizard,  hit F5, and type in Shenas panties, and hit enter. It is the best thrown weapon in the game, for whatever reason.
