Imps

So, I'm planning on using these as a defense instead of dogs, and I know they'll just escape if I try to tie them up, so I have to build their cages and release them when the invaders trigger the traps, but is there any way to force them back in the traps so my dwarves don't get fried when they try and head out or will they be considered (tame) and not attack?  I've never done anything with trapping before.

If they killed a dwarf once, they'll kill dwarfs again no matter what. They can't be tamed, since the fire imps, being a fiery demon and all, doesn't have the PET tag, nevertless a TRAINABLE or anything you could use for defense line. The way you suggest it, a death chamber, could effectively be done with pressure plates, floodgates, and some cage traps in between the dwarven bait and the imps.

Close door, build trap, station a recruit, open door, watch the imps run back into new cages.

I suggest the wyrm mod. Just copy paste the code into a creature raw, generate a new world, and capture some lives one with cage traps. Once you've breed and trained them, you'll have your fire-breathing defense line you so wish for...

You forgot a detail: Dorfs get webbed in GCS webs and trigger traps. Right now we have some 12 caged dwarves, including you.

Or you could add the pet tag...

and make them trainable while you're at it...

Would this require me to generate a new world, or will I be fine because I'm only changing creatures, not adding new ones?

It worked fine when I did it with wolves.

Then once they're trained I can just tie them up at the entrance instead of guard dogs?  W00t.  Continuing on this subject, any one have some code for lobster cats so I can stop getting those stupid 'too injured' messages?

This thread seems to have cat grasping mouth details on third post. I haven't tried it myself however. Maybe I should seeing my current fort has lots of vermin and every migrant wave is bringing in a cat or two.

The cat mouth mod in that post works perfectly.
