My first MegaProject
« on: November 06, 2008, 08:44:07 pm »

Hello dorfs.  I am here today to tell you of my awesome undertaking in which I will partake in the destruction of a Human City.  Not by pillage and plunder, but of collapses and chaos.

Whilst in class, I played around with destroying a few human buildings. Which ended up making 3 of my men crazy/suicidal, one had broken legs so he starved, and the other 3 were killed by collapsed buildings.  Many human children, animals, and guards were killed. Blood and chunks EVERYWHERE.

So, what I want to do:
I plan to make an underground bunker for when I pull the lever which will bring all human civilization to a crumble, but there are some things I need to know first.

How should I go about destroying all these buildings in one fell swoop?
Does one support at the center/bottom of a completely dug out Z level support it?
Do I put one support at the center of every human building?
I have a few ideas, but im not 100% sure with the mechanics of the game and collapses.  So if you guys can help me out. I would be glad to name my starting dwarves after you guys and post my story.

Try digging out everything on the z-level immediately below the town(within the city limits; there's no need to go beyond that), except for one tile. Then channel a rectangle around the town. Then build a support underneath the town. Then dig out the tile you didn't earlier. Then connect a lever to the support. Then pull the lever.

Does one support at the center/bottom of a completely dug out Z level support it?

Yes.

Do I put one support at the center of every human building?

No, a single support underneath the entire town will be enough.

regardless, the slime shooter will be completed, come hell or high water, which are both entirely plausible setbacks at this point.

A single support under the whole town works, *sure*, but it's not as much *fun*.

Allow me to propose wiring up each of the buildings in the town individually.  Then, you can recreate scenes from "Tremors", the movie with the underground worms that destroy things on the surface.

Bob McHuman: Ohmygawd, the inn just collapsed, killing several people!

Bill McHuman: We're under attack!  Quick, everyone into the church!

Bob McHuman: Oh noes!!!111eleventyone!  The church just collapsed!

Bill McHuman: What manner of fell sorcery is this?  Seek shelter in the meeting hall...

Etc.

Also, you can manufacture vomit at a smelter.  Subsequently removing the smelter spews vomit over a surprising area.

For added fun, fill the hollow area with magma, or kitten, or HFS guys.

Or all of them at once. Just seperate them :).

If you want added destruction, dig below dropping zone and dig ramps upward. Then remove the ramps (Make sure you have Supports, though.)

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Not a particularly necessary, but then again, what is?

If you do one support under every building, I suggest you build a pond, put one pressure pad in it for each support (one for each house), set them to go off when water reaches 3/7, fill the area with 2/7 water (Setting it as a pond should work. If you set each edge as a separate pond, multiple dwarves will fill it at once. Just make sure you have enough buckets.), then add one bucket of water, and watch.

So would you guys like me to tell the tale of the death and destruction that the humans will witness?
And if so would you like the Dwarves to have any names?

Doubt it. I had a teacher once that let me play my rougelikes whenever I was done with the work. Fridays were reserved for a class-wide Tribes game. He probably just has a badass teacher.

The Gophers have suspended construction of Project EGAD.

Anyone know how to turn on magma structures in 40D?  I embarked at the site of my chosen victims, and discovered to my surprise that the town was centered around a temple to the god of volcanoes.  I wasn't planning on building up an extensive metal industry in this fortress, but it's not every day you come across an enclosed, rectangular pool of 7/7 lava with no nearby hazards.  I figure the god of volcanoes has given me a sign.

However, discovering a lava temple doesn't seem to permit the construction of lava forges and such.

Of course, I'm still planning to drop everything else to the lowest z-level...
