Probably what I disliked was that you couldn't customize your ship quite to the extent that I expected from the system it displayed. Also, DarkBasic. I'm surprised he's made it run that well.

I'm just a casual space sim player, but it seems to me like you can customize your ship quite a bit.  The ability to stretch and scale your ship parts is something I haven't seen before.

That blows me away too as how he could make something like this from DB as well.  I guess, if it works, who cares what language it's coded in.

The current game developers should care. If one man can develop such a deep space sim with seamless space, multiplayer and planet landing using DB... the developers should revise the way they work... but they'll never do it for sure. For now it's almost an axiom: the bigger the game the better it is.

Sorry, I missed your post.

I played this game and I should say that I was disappointed.
WEll, the 1st one was a breakthrough, for that time it was very new and fun (bases on planets, ship descents, energy shield <->weapon systems energy transition? Wow!).
But for now this game is kinda... boring. If you play it long enough you'll see what I mean.
Almost the same enemies, almost the same planet maps and almost the same space battles.
It lacks global space structures (like in X/X2/X3), it lacks realism and nice storyline. So basically it has engine and nice content but if it had more features/elements it'd be less boring and much more fun.

It is worth playing though, because maybe I was "bored" because I already seen it in 1st parkan for many years and expected something very new from the 2nd part (which became just a "graphical engine upgrade" for me).

Yeah, the second Parkan was a sort of an insult to the game's title. I guess that boomerang failed to return.
Maybe I was mostly turned away by the hardware problems I had with it at the time, but seriously, what's the name of the Parkan cruiser doing in the title if the cruiser itself is stolen from the player in the beginning of the game?

If you want an interesting space Elite-like game, try Edge of Chaos (Independence War 2). It has a story to guide you, although it's a bit too restricting at times, but you've got these several star systems to fly about in, and the only time you have to use a jumpdrive is when you want to travel to a different one. You're also a pirate in that game, which is innately interesting. Hovering around L-points, sizing up freighters for profit vs escort, minding the presence of the police and the navy around..  then you pick a target, and if you're ok with attracting attention, just blast at it right away. With any luck, the captain will have a mind to escape and jettison his cargo pods before the escorts gets their bearing on you, and then it's a wild dance of newton physics, lateral thrusters, particle weaponry and flare launchers. For a more relaxed acquisition, get your hands on an LDS inhibitor missile and mark the freighter as it's about to zip off in LDS. The escort will be several hundred thousand miles away before they realize the freighter is missing.  :)
I like that game...

I think I played that once...  I remember trying to survive under an onslaught of three hideously overpowered thugs sitting in the "baby steps" area of the game, and I had to resort to letting my hideously overpowered telepathic backflipping dog to deal with them, which he did with disturbing ease.

Actually, I think the only thing in that game that wasn't overpowered was me...  I guess that made him underpowered, and everything else normal.

Anybody heard of or played Rubies of Eventide, seems like it is pretty obscure?  I haven't played it yet, but I'm downloading the client now.  There are a million free mmorpg's out there, but this one has caught my interest because of the level of depth.

Just read GameOgre's Review:

quote:
If you ask gamers what they are looking for in a MMORPG you will most likely hear answers like great graphics, intense character customization, freedom to do what you want to when you want to do it, 24/7 support, and deep game play similar to old school RPGs. Well, Rubies of Eventide hits most, if not all, of those qualities right on the head. While more and more MMORPGs focus on action and graphics over game play depth, RoE plays more like an old school RPG on graphical steroids. That should not come as a total surprise though since Rubies of Eventide started as a MUD (basically an online RPG in text only) several years ago. Now RoE can suck you in with not only its game play but its lush graphics as well.

Want to get an idea of how deep this game is? Just go to make a new character and you will get a good look at RoE's depth. Besides the usual selection of races such as human, dwarf, and elf, you may also be an orc, gnome, leshy (a hovering creature best suited for magic), or, GameOgre.com's favorite, an ogre. However, 7 races is nothing compared to the number of classes available. You can play over 100 classes and it can take a while if you want to learn about each one. Some of the classes are mainstays in fantasy RPGs like the wizard, warrior, and ranger while others like the tailor, poet, and dark paladin add a certain spice of life to the game. Next, you will need to choose what skills (over 50 in the game) you should focus on. This is where you can really customize your character the way that you want him or her to be. Want an ogre poet that can handle himself or herself in combat? Then put as many points in the sword skill as you do language skills. Simply put, the possibilities are endless.

You would think that a game with great graphics, deep game play, and heaping amounts of freedom would be packed constantly right? Sadly, that is not the case with Rubies of Eventide. While I have enjoyed this game over the likes of larger MMORPGs like Dark Ages of Camelot and Asheron's Call 2, this game currently lacks a large fan base. As I write this review, there are a total of 36 players on the main server. That is not a typo, just 36. Despite the fact that the install program seems to take an extraordinary long time and the game lacks a solid manual online, this lack of players is the only reason Rubies of Eventide does not receive a higher score in this review. Hopefully, this game will gather more support as people try it because RoE stands out remarkably well in the industry as an old school style RPG with MMORPG graphics.

Game Ogre's Rating (out of 10):

8.75

A MUD with graphics?  I'll believe it when I see it, but it sure does sound cool.

Last I checked, it hadn't updated in months... but it was still fun. One of the few MMOs where exploration can be enjoyable.

Just wanted to bump for the latest version of Ascii Sector. It's a game that progresses a lot from version to version. I played first when it was all space combat but now it includes nice rogue-like ground combat.

I think the developer of this game deserves as much praise as Toady. His game maybe isn't as ambitious as DF but it's still pretty complex (and it will continue to get much more complex, see the dev plans) and the developer is very consistent and hardworking.

Never seen this before.  I watched the trailer and it looks pretty cool.  Looks quite hard as well though with the real time combat.
